Cole’s doubts haunt him: he’s almost certain he’s too old for Timmy, and that he’s pushing him into a life he’ll eventually resent, keeping him from spreading his newfound wings and taking flight toward his best future. Acting on his fears, Cole pressures Timmy to accept an internship in Manhattan—far from the home they’ve built together. He means well, but Timmy feels like a baby bird kicked out of the nest too soon.
Tensions rise until fear, resentment, and desire draw Timmy and Cole into explosive conflict. When the dust settles, will Timmy wing away like a young blackbird, or return to nest with Cole in their happy garden home?

Cole
“Well, climb in. I need my heating pad,” Timmy says.
I slide into the bed and fit myself to my lover’s slender form. “Are you shivering?”
“Can’t seem to get the chill out of my b-bones,” he admits, his voice breaking.
“Good thing warming you is one of my greatest pleasures.” I wrap my arms around his shoulders. His skin is cool; it reminds me of how it felt to hold the old Timmy. The Timmy who held his feelings back. He was the coldest young man I’d ever come across.
“How will I stay warm in Manhattan?” he asks in a childlike voice.
I find myself gasping, and I quickly slap my hand over my mouth to stifle it. Is Timmy implying that he needs a man in his bed to provide the warmth that will stop his trembling? And would any man do? “I’m sure you’ll manage.”
He makes a huffing sound I don’t know how to translate.
“You’re young,” I say.
“So the fuck what?” he replies.
“The world is your oyster.”
“My oyster? Are you for real?” More rhetorical questions. Defensive posturing on Timmy’s part, to be sure.
“Your opportunities are endless, Timmy.”
“You’re pushing me away, Cole.”
Timmy has always been too perceptive. I scramble to a sitting position, so my bare back is pressed against the bed’s solid headboard. “I only want you to be sure.”
“Sure of what?” he asks.
“Of this…Of us.”
“And you think leaving you and my home will prove something to me?” Timmy hurls another of those harsh huffs into the darkness. “I think it will only prove something to you.”
He could be right. Not that I’d ever admit it.
“You made this bed, Cole.”
He isn’t speaking literally.
For the first time I can remember, we drift off into two separate dreamworlds.
