Sky diving was not for everyone. It was one of the few jobs in Port Ceyran that made a decent amount of money, but there was also so much danger involved that, for many people, it was not worth the risk. Sky divers spent most of their time on airships, searching for whalls, and then hauling their prize back to Port Ceyran after they succeeded in their hunt. They were rarely home and did not know when, or even if, they might return.

In addition to the danger of hunting the powerful whalls, there were all kinds of creatures deep in the dark water, some with massively large teeth, some with grasping tentacles and crushing beaks, some of whom could swamp their retrieval boat like it was no more than tissue paper. It was why most people did not stay in whalling longer than a few years and why the mortality rate was so high.

Eron had lost a number of friends over the seven years he had been a sky diver. He had earned his First-Class rating two years ago, after five years of sky diving. Now, at age twenty-seven, he was still at it. For how much longer, he was not sure, but as a sky diver, he lived day to day, and that was the best he could ask for.

I waved the bartender down, a skinny blond twink who looked like he would have been better suited to dancing on the bar than staffing it, and ordered a Bahama Mama. A moment later, a familiar voice rang in my ears, low and husky.

“Long night?”

I looked up, startled. Seated next to me was Oliver. Sexy, straitlaced Oliver, with his dark hair and scruffy beard and gray eyes. He was wearing a clingy white t-shirt and black jeans, and damned if the guys weren’t right. He did have washboard abs, if the rippling muscles under his thin cotton shirt were to be believed. “What are you doing here?” I glanced around to see if he was with someone, but I didn’t see anyone else. Just Chef Oliver.

Oliver chuckled, his tone rich and luxurious, sending waves of desire through me. He leaned in as he spoke. “Decided to take the night off early. See, I had a really challenging client tonight and after he left, I figured I deserved a few drinks and a little relaxation.” He took a sip of his drink and raised his eyebrows.

“Oh yeah?” The flirtation in his words was clear. “I had a rough night, too. I had to plan a party and there was a lot of pressure to make everything perfect. I had to deal with this hot-tempered celebrity chef. Luckily, the chef turned out to be outstanding. Provided great customer service. Really top-notch.” The bartender slid my drink to me and I nodded in thanks before taking a sip.

A moment later, Oliver twisted on his barstool to face me, leaning even closer. “I’m glad he took good care of you.”

I shivered, my nipples hardening under my shirt and my cock following suit. I was still wearing the white button-down and blue slacks I’d gone to Hidden Cove in, but the tie had long since been loosened and draped around my neck, and I hoped both the slacks and the shirt disguised my arousal. With a nod, I grinned at him. “He did. He took really good care of me.” Oliver’s tongue darted out to wet his bottom lip and my throat tightened with desire. Before he could speak again, I blurted out a request. “Dance with me?”

I refuse to let Daisy help me carry anything down to the car, but she insists on at least bringing down some of the stuffed toys. So that’s what she does while I tried to lug the giant cot box into the lift and out to my car, having left the biggest, bulkiest item for last.
I’m still struggling with it in the foyer of my apartment building when an amused, American-accented voice calls out, “Do you need a hand?”
I turn to face the owner of the voice. I recognize him as our upstairs neighbour, though we haven’t really spoken, except to nod at each other in passing.
He’s dressed in what appears to be part of a firefighter’s uniform. A tight black t-shirt and industrial cargo pants in that tell-tale mustard yellow colour, which are grease stained, hard-worn and insanely masculine, with thick red and grey suspenders hanging in loose loops from his narrow hips.
This man is incredibly attractive. He’s got to be at least ten years my senior with his silver fox beard sharply trimmed, accenting his angular jawline and making those steely grey eyes pop. He has crow’s feet beside those intense eyes, belying how often he smiles, and dark hair atop his head, which is cropped neatly at the sides, but longer on top and wavy, with the most beautiful curl dangling over his forehead. This man is sin personified. I can’t help the way I take in those broad shoulders, the tapering of his form to his slim waist, and those thick, strong thighs.
I want to climb him like a tree.
“No,” I tell him, “I’ve got it. Thanks.”
He comes to help me anyway, tucking his just-retrieved mail into the rear pocket of his pants before he lifts one end of the ridiculously heavy box like I might lift a pillow. The casual display of strength throws me off for a moment too long while I can’t help imagining what it might be like to be handled by someone so strong.
These musings distract me so much that I miss him asking a question and Daisy has to say my name to get my attention.
“Sorry,” I apologise, feeling my cheeks heat. Stupid pasty complexion. “What was that?”
“I asked whether you’re moving out,” he says, sounding just as amused as he did a few moments ago. Once again, I’m enamoured by his accent. It doesn’t sound overly regional so, with my not-exactly-vast knowledge of American accents, I guess maybe he’s from California? Maybe? “Y’know, ‘cause we’re carrying this thing out instead of in.”
“Oh,” I heft my end of the box to try and redistribute the weight, “No. I threw a shower for her in my apartment. I didn’t think this part of the plan through.”
“Ironic,” Daisy taunts.
“Shut up,” I respond.
Sexy Fireman’s eyes seem to light with understanding as he looks between us. “Siblings?” he questions.
Considering Daisy and I look nothing alike, and the age gap often throws people off, I’m impressed and I tell him so, craning my neck to look back over my shoulder as I back my end of the large box through the door that leads to the parking lot outside the complex.
He chuckles, “Well, it’s like that between my kids.”
Some part of my stomach drops a little as he mentions having kids, because that usually means a partner of some description.
Not that I should care if he’s involved, considering I’m not single.

The hot guy held out his hand for me to shake. I offered him my right hand instinctively, then promptly changed it, pulling my bandaged hand back and offering him my left hand instead.

The hot guy graciously shook it, switching to use his left hand as well, happily accommodating my needs.

Victor introduced us. “Ashton, I’d like you to meet Jax. Jax Lockhart. He’s my newest shining star who’s ready to knock it out of the ballpark.”

“Really?” I said. “That’s exciting news. Where are you from, Jax?”

The rough-around-the-edges stud smiled, and I had to steel my knees yet again. There was something about him that I couldn’t quite put my finger on, a certain je ne sais quoi you might even say, although nothing like mine.

“I’m from the west coast. I’ve sold property everywhere from Malibu to Palm Springs, but I’m excited to take a bite out of the Big Apple now.”

Ouch, did he really say that?

How could someone look like a suited-up Son of Anarchy yet use a pun that painful?

It made him brim with a sense of something that irked me.

What was it?

Innocence, perhaps.

No, naivety.

No… it was authenticity.

He oozed authenticity.

It sent a shiver down my spine.

There was just something about authentic people that I didn’t quite trust.

This guy had an agenda, I could smell it a mile away.

Tobias Jacobsen, clad only in a towel knotted about his waist, stood before a large mirror above the sink. Carefully, he raked his razor across the right side of his face. He wanted to make sure his appearance matched the auspiciousness of tonight’s event.

Tonight’s performance would be the first of the truncated summer season. He was not disturbed at all by the light case of nerves he was experiencing now. He learned long ago—back in high school, in fact—that feeling a bit of an edge before a concert was almost always a prescient sign of a good performance to follow. A few of his fellow musicians—his roommate included—seemed surprised that, after eight years with the New York Philharmonic, the jitters still held sway over Toby—at least until the end of the opening piece.

“Really, Toby, it makes no sense to me,” Sabine Dietrich said. Sabine was his friend, colleague and roomie with whom he split the twenty-eight hundred dollar per month rent on the two-bedroom apartment they shared in SoHo. “I don’t think I’ve ever heard a better trumpeter anywhere. You don’t have anything to be nervous about.”

Toby, who looked younger than his current age of thirty-two, blushed at Sabine’s compliment. Certainly, he would never disparage or discount his own talent. When he began taking lessons back in middle school, it was generally recognized among his peers that he possessed a natural aptitude for the trumpet. Other high school musicians envied the favor he received from the woman who doubled as both band director and orchestra conductor during his attendance at Asheville High School. And while he loved New York City, his home now, and its constant, frenetic current of airborne electricity, he never quite recovered from having to leave his adopted hometown of breathtaking hills, gorgeous green valleys and quirky but friendly citizens.

His shave complete, he snapped his towel away from his private area, as his mother called it when he was a little boy, and stepped into his gray Gildan boxer briefs. His recently-acquired tattoo of a treble clef emerging above the elastic waistband to the right side of his belly button (an “innie”) often served as a hot enticement during sexual encounters with friends or strangers, their curious eyes drawn to the musical symbol first and then to his “love symbol,” arising from a tuft of auburn pubic hair.

Toby wasn’t exactly a full-on ginger, but he was damn close.

Before getting into formal drag by dressing himself in a black tux, he admired his chest and torso, not unlike many narcissistically inclined ( and maybe those with poor body image, too ) males. No sagging pecs on this hot fella, Toby thought as a cocky smile crossed his lips. Like any self-respecting New York gay man, he kept an active gym membership—and actually used it, too. His dark areolas (with semi-erect gumdrop nipples) were surrounded on three sides by a field of reddish hair. However, not a single lock appeared below his nipples—just a fine, muscular abdomen as firm as the pecs above. A trail of darkening hair began a thin creep from an area a few inches below his chest and kept thickening until tufts of hair circled his navel like a cloak.

He glanced at the sunburst wall clock on his bedroom wall—the first annoying instrument he saw upon waking each morning. Immediately, he realized his need to hustle. As though reading his thoughts, Sabine called through his bedroom door: “Ready for an assist with your bowtie?”

“Give me just a minute, please.”

God, how he hated that thing! A real black tie, which was required rather than the much more convenient clip-on. However, the good maestro had invested ten minutes maligning the easy one, ending her tirade this way: “If I ever see you wearing a fake bowtie, you will be fined one hundred dollars per infraction.”
