Southern Awakenings Series, Book 2

Three weeks of playing taxi shouldn’t have him tied up in knots…

Everett says he owes him for his help at Foxland, but Carver has long been comfortable in the shadow of his unknown past. He doesn’t need the former detective to search through his life for family. No sense in holding space for something he’ll never get.

With his auto shop scraping by, he’ s back to bartending to pay the bills— and while he doesn’t want to admit it, the perk of easy company is losing its shine. Too broke to refuse the work, he gets a tip about a sedan off the highway. But the man behind the wheel quickly becomes more than he bargained for.

Daniel Henning may look like some bumbling academic, but when he brushes off the dig dirt, the man is downright gorgeous. He’s in town for three weeks and absolutely running from his baggage. Just like another college-boy that Carver used to know.

Maybe he hasn’t learned a thing if he’s willing to make this mistake twice, but it’s not just Daniel’s talent with rope that keeps pulling Carver back in. Daniel looks at him like the best parts of what he lost. If they could each escape the weight of their pasts, might they have a future together?

Only more time would tell. But Carver’s never been the kind to ask.

Excerpt:

Carver

Carver stared at him from under the brim of his hat. Daniel turned his way in the hall, still not leaving. Blue eyes darted to his lips, then away, and the third time Daniel repeated the circuit he stopped hiding his amusement. He’d been ready for Daniel to be a bit gun-shy, but the desire was clearly there. What was he waiting for?

“Look at you,” he teased. “You’re dyin’ to know.”

“Know what?”

“What you’re missing.” He crossed his arms over his chest, aware what the pose might do for his biceps. “Admit it, genius. You can’t stand not knowing.”

He expected the professor to laugh. Maybe joke about his cheesy lines. Instead, something in Daniel’s eyes flipped like a switch and he closed their distance fast, crowding into his space.

Daniel ducked under his hat to press their foreheads together. “Let’s say you’re right,” he whispered, voice strained. “That I can’t stand it. What then?”

Carver hitched up his chin in challenge. “I think you know what.”

Daniel’s exhalations broke and crested over his face, but he didn’t move. He held completely still, putting the ball in the other man’s court.

“I think I want to kiss you,” Daniel said at last.

Well, that much had been obvious all night. “Just think?” He laughed. “I must be losing my touch—”

Before he could even finish, Daniel’s arm was around his neck pulling their mouths together. The professor sighed against his lips and braced a hand on his hip. And damn, but it was a good kiss. He was firm but didn’t rush, didn’t try to take more than was offered. Carver kissed back with subtle pressure and teased his tongue along the seam of his lips, toying with him more than anything. The cool taste of beer gave way to the heat of Daniel’s mouth and Carver felt dizzy. He hadn’t drunk enough tonight to be this off-balance.

Daniel pulled back first, holding his eyelids closed. He mumbled under his breath, “Of course you’re an amazing kisser.”

“That a problem?”

The prof licked his bottom lip. “Tell you in a minute.”

With renewed purpose, Daniel steered them into the house, pushing the door shut as he pressed Carver against his own wall. He wedged a leg between his feet, encouraging Carver to rock against the pressure of his thigh. Their lips met again and this time, he didn’t hold himself back. He teased with his tongue when Daniel opened his mouth to him. He’d thought to use the distraction to flip their positions, but that wasn’t possible with Daniel’s hands wrapped around his wrists. Daniel used the hold to force his arms above his head, taking advantage of his surprise to kiss down his neck.

Well, damn. All right…

Daniel rocked against him and mumbled, “Tell me if I’m doing something wrong here.”

“Not at all.” He cleared his throat. “Just not what I expected.”

Daniel licked a stripe up his neck and goddamn, he couldn’t help the way his hips jolted at that. “You kidding me? I’ve barely been keeping a lid on it.” Daniel kissed over his collarbone and groaned. “I’ve been trying not to do this all night. All fucking week.” He bit down on his shoulder and tugged at the fabric covering his chest. “Take off your shirt already.”

Shit, that’s hot.

He pulled the offending garment up and over, shouldering off his layers and dropping them to the floor. After playing the lead all night, Carver hadn’t expected this sort of encounter, but damn if he wasn’t willing to come along for the ride.

PROLOGUE: Bo

Two Years Ago

“I got accepted,” Jamie said, catching me off guard with his sudden announcement. My small boat glided across the river while we headed to the shack after selling our latest catch in town. The day’s fishing had been epic. What came after, not so much.

I was aware that he’d applied to colleges but secretly hoped he wouldn’t be accepted. The wish was a shitty one considering I was in love with him. I turned toward him as he steered the boat, using the engine tiller as a rudder. He looked tired after a long day of fishing and checking lobster pots.

I crouched so as not to block his view and scooted to the bench seat, sitting beside him and reaching for the handle he held while he guided us to what I considered our home. “It’s my turn,” I said, tapping his hand. He made way and I took over, but he remained by my side. “When were you going to tell me?” I asked, forcing myself to look at him while keeping my emotions in check. I was terrified of losing Jamie.

He looked away and toward the shoreline. I knew he didn’t want to have this conversation but he owed me an honest answer. “I’m telling you now, ain’t I?” he groused.

“What am I gonna do without you?” I asked, biting the inside of my cheek so I wouldn’t tear up. “You said we’d be together at the shack forever, J.”

Jamie didn’t handle difficult talks well. In fact, he preferred avoiding them at all costs. But this time he found his voice and it was surprisingly strong. “Damn it, Bo! I can’t just tell my folks I ain’t gonna listen to them about making future plans and shit.”

The words stung. “What about our plans though?” I asked, being careful not to lock eyes with the boy I’d worshiped since sixth grade.

“I’ll be back every summer,” he defended. “It’ll go by fast, you’ll see.”

“What about our fishin’ business and fixing up the shack?” I asked. “We had future plans too, remember?”

“We ain’t got the money, Bo. How’s that shit gonna happen without money?”

He was right, we were broke, but we had each other and that made us wealthy in my eyes. We rode the final two miles across smooth water in silence, neither wanting to admit our childhood fantasies had been replaced by adult realities. I loved him and I hoped Jamie loved me. He swore that he loved me even if he couldn’t say the words out loud. We even did a blood pact in eighth grade, pressing our thumbs together in solidarity. He was mine according to his pledge. I knew I was his.

He jumped out of the boat and tethered us to the dock. I remained in the boat, looking up at him, cracking into a million tiny pieces.

“Take me with you,” I pleaded.

He stood above me on the dock, cupping his hand over his eyes so he could see me. I knew I sounded pathetic and hoped I didn’t look it. “How am I supposed to do that, Bo? I won’t have a job and you’ve got all this here,” Jamie argued, gesturing toward the fishing shack. “What will I have for my future?”

“But I told you I’ll share everything with you. One day I’ll own this and you’ll have half,” I reminded him. “You promised me.” Tears fell from my eyes despite my best efforts. I hated appearing weak in front of him, but I loved Jamie and the thought of him leaving without me was too much to bear.

“We’re kids, Bo. We’re barely out of high school,” he pointed out. “Did you actually think we’d be getting hitched one day?”

His question stabbed my heart. A wave of sickening understanding passed over me. “You didn’t?” I asked.

There’s always a big event or uncomfortable truth that happens to a kid when they cross over to adulthood. Life decides it’s time you faced some hard facts for some cold reason. All the years you wasted wishing you were older can be regretted when you get there. Wishing to drive. Wishing to be eighteen. Wishing to be legal so you can drink. We wish all those innocent years away, and for what?

“Bo, you know we can’t get married, don’t you?” Jamie asked. “This is the fuckin’ south, in case you forgot.”

A lie seemed appropriate after his comment. “Maybe,” I whispered. I lifted my face to him even though I knew my cheeks were covered in tears. “But I woulda done everything I could to take you with me if things were reversed, Jamie. I know that for sure.”

Roughing the Kicker Cover

The Package Deal Series, Book 6

Do you believe in fate? Yeah, me neither until the sexy Navy SEAL I hooked up with three years ago suddenly reappears back in my life in the form of one of my best friends’ older brother. And now, they want me to share a room with him in the Keys.

“Can you share a room with Jesse tonight?”

How could I say no?

What Greg and Cooper didn’t know was Jesse and I met three years ago in Madrid. And when I finally hooked up with the handsome Navy SEAL, our night turned into a weekend of the best sex of my life. Jesse made me see stars twenty-four hours a day. We had a connection, but our timing wasn’t right. He was going back to America, and I was headed back to Italy to play soccer.

It was all for the best because I didn’t do relationships. Especially with a man nine years older and the total opposite of me. But I never forgot him, even though I tried.

Fast forward three years later, and we find ourselves thrown back together again in Portland. I’m the new kicker for the Portland Pirates and Jesse Evans has reappeared in my life. And just as fate would have it, my dream hookup is Cooper’s older brother, and he’s moving his security firm to Portland.

Would he remember me? Did that weekend three years ago affect him as much as it did me?

I guess time would tell when we shared that room in the Florida Keys.

Roughing the Kicker is a bisexual age gap and opposites attract MM Sports Romance and Book 6 in The Package Deal Series.

Excerpt:

“Do you mind sharing a room with Jesse? It would only be for the night. They’ll have the other one ready tomorrow.”

I bit the inside of my cheek. Think Dom, think. But nothing useful came to mind except images of Jesse Evans naked. What was I supposed to say? No?

I inclined my head and somehow managed to form words. “Sure. Uh… no problem.”

“Are you sure?” Greg held my gaze, searching my reaction for any indication that I wasn’t okay spending the night with that hot fucker. And honestly, I wasn’t sure I was.

Still, I swallowed and just let the first thing I could think of fall out of my mouth.

“Yeah, it’s fine. I was just worried. I have sleep apnea and I might snore. That’s all,” I laughed maniacally. “Don’t wanna keep him up or anything.”

Don’t think about him being up. Don’t think about him being up.

Greg blew out a breath. The look of relief on his face would have been comical if I wasn’t a massive ball of nerves, but there was no way I’d burst his bubble. He and Cooper didn’t have to invite me, but they did. And I needed to be gracious and not bust a nut right here in the airport. Or get on the next available flight back to Portland.

“Oh, yeah, okay. I’m sure it’ll be fine. Jesse was in the military, so I’m sure he’s used to all kinds of noises at night.”

I tried to control the squirming, but I couldn’t stop myself from fidgeting. I tried tamping down my raging, overwhelming lust for the former Navy SEAL . “Yeah. Yeah, okay.”

Greg clapped me on the shoulder. “Thanks, man. We really appreciate it.” With that settled, he walked away and went over to talk to Marcus.

Jesse Evans was the hottest man I’d ever seen. He had muscles for days. Muscles I wanted to lick, and—no. Couldn’t go there or I’d be sporting a huge boner. It seriously wasn’t fair for one man to be so damn tempting. He was tall and dressed like a runway model, with his perfect blond hair and his perfect smile. And then there was his commanding tone that just did it for me. I felt like I might have a heart attack right here at the airport and he was nowhere around to resuscitate me with vigorous mouth-to-mouth. I’d die right here on the floor of the airport before I could get my hands on him.

Dropping my head back, I stared at the ceiling and prayed to Saint Rocco to protect me from myself tonight. All I wanted to do was to climb him like a tree and rub myself all over him.

I bet he could make me cum just by looking at me with that piercing and smoldering look that said hold your ass still while I rim you till you lose your damn mind.

And I would, too. I’d hold still and let him have his wicked way with me in any goddamn position he wanted. God, now I was hard.

Fanculo la mia vita. Fuck my life.

Oblivious Cover

IOU, Book 3

My hot best friend has no idea what he’s doing to me.

He sends me naughty texts at the most inappropriate times. He lets me fall asleep on top of him when we watch movies. And his protective side comes out if I dance too close to anyone at our favorite club.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but those are things a boyfriend does. Except August isn’t my boyfriend, he’s my bestfriend, and those lines are drawn in permanent marker. The one time we tried to cross the boundary between friends and lovers, it failed so spectacularly that we never did it again. So … “friends” is good enough. That’s what I tell myself. Because at least I have him in my life. Without him, I’d be lost.

But after we’re dared to kiss, and that kiss reshapes reality, we agree to be friends who do things with each other. Nakey things.

That makes my life so much better. And so much worse. After all, August doesn’t want to settle down, and he never wants to get married. While I do.

Most importantly, no matter how our relationship changes, he can’t find out I’m desperately in love with him.

Oblivious is a sweet and steamy contemporary m/m romance about best friends who don’t know they’re already dating. Noah and August are always touching, finish each other’s sentences, and bristle whenever the other gets within six feet of a date, but they can’t see what’s crystal clear to everyone else. Oblivious features badly timed schmexy texts, a hot kiss that rocks two men’s universes, and (unofficially, but likely) the highest number of heartfelt marriage proposals in a romance novel ever.

Excerpt:

Growing up the adopted child of an older couple, his parents strove to make every holiday a fantastic, Norman Rockwell-esque event. Not only were there decorations and music throughout the month of December, but both his mother and father would bake and spend days wrapping the presents they had taken months to choose. They gave the kind of gifts you had no idea how much you wanted until you pulled the paper open to reveal them.

As an adult — though even now at twenty-eight, he alternated from moment to moment between feeling too ancient to live and too young to be trusted with so much responsibility— he had carried that tradition on. Even when he was living with Kurt and the preparations had been tasteful white twinkle lights, expensive wine, and fancy hors d’oeuvres rather than the light-up Santas, caroling, and hot chocolate drunk through candy cane straws that he actually preferred.

Now that he was on his own again, Lane was planning on making this Christmas his best yet.

He shook off the combination of sharp, piercing anger and the bruised, melancholic ache of hurt that always accompanied thoughts of Kurt and lifted his insulated cup of hot chocolate. Lane’s lips tipped upward as he sipped his warm, sweet drink. The rich scent of cinnamon and chocolate wafted up around him.

His new colleagues at Lawrence F. Talbot Elementary thought he was crazy for coming to the mecca of consumerism just weeks before Christmas—they’d told him so, Meryl especially—but he loved the madness and the melee.

Plus, the Queenstown Mall really did it up for the holiday.

Built after the real heydey of American malls, Queenstown Central Mall was an enormous, beige, windowless box. The only nominal point of interest in its architecture was that it resembled a squat X when viewed from above. Inside, though, the the developers had somehow managed to capture the quaint charm of old city streets lined with shops. There weren’t many big name stores left in the building, but the ones that were there went full out for Christmas.

“You uh…you were baking?” Daisuke points to the dish rag in my lap.

Berto and Hunter still aren’t paying attention as game music blares from the speakers. “No,” I reply. “I was…blowing my nose in this. Boom.” I toss it at his shoulder. “Voila. Now you are sick.”

Daisuke stares at me in shock before his face softens. I frown at him in faux-anger with plenty of real anger laced in there.

Daisuke folds the rag in his lap, seemingly content with this weird olive branch I’ve offered. “Worst Christmas gift ever,” he says.

Before my face can actually crack up, Berto and Hunter turn back to us.

“Hey, so we can play a game while we wait for the cookies to cool,” Berto says.

“Yeah we can…” Hunter pauses and looks between us on the couch. “Did you two meet already?”

“Yes,” I say as Daisuke says, “No.”

I glance at him then add, “We were at your Thanksgiving thing.”

“Right, that’s what you meant,” Daisuke says. “We were…both there.”

Hunter’s blue eyes dart between the two of us. Berto might be naive, but his boyfriend is a perceptive guy; he’s like a counselor or something, and Berto claims he’s the “smartest, coolest guy ever.”

“I read that you two grew up in Montreal,” Hunter says, carefully choosing his words. “Are you guys friends?”

“No,” I say, just as Daisuke says, “Yes.”

We fully rotate to glance at each other. We used to be able to read each other’s minds, and now we’re both in sync, yet completely off at the same time. “We’re not friends…we’re competitors. Because he’s driving for McLuther now.”

“Eh, that’s for the season,” Berto says, picking up cards. “Tonight we’re all mates.” Daisuke looks relieved, but Hunter seems dubious about my response. My former best friend and I are going to need to work things out in order to exist in the same circles.

Drive to Thrive Cover

Formula Q is the fastest motorsport in the world. Only the highest-performing athletes can make it to the grid. They drive fast, work hard, play hard, but off-camera, anything goes.

The public knows me as Damon ‘The Speed Demon’ Davidoff, eligible bachelor and winner of FQ titles around the world. Fans adore me and my team supports me. They don’t need to know I’m so deeply in the closet I intend to bury myself there.

Then my poor health caught up to me and my world came crashing down. I could bounce back easily if it weren’t for one little complication: my male nurse is attractive as hell.

I can suppress these feelings during the season break—I have to. I’m not going to expose my secret just because when Rocky puts his hands on me I feel a fire coursing through my veins.

As the weeks go by, I somehow let Rocky under my skin and into my heart. He’s smart, sweet, and everything I never knew I needed.

I thought I wanted a clean bill of health and to keep winning my races. Now, for the first time in my life, I want so much more. I want him, and damn if that isn’t the scariest thing I’ve ever felt.

Drive to Thrive is a male/male motorsports romance novel. It involves Christmas karaoke, New Year’s Eve parties, Las Vegas swimming pool dates, and yes, lots of racing action worldwide. It is book 1 of a series but can be read as a standalone

Whiskey & Scars, Book 1

Shiloh wasn’t a typical omega…

He liked his boots tall, his shirts short and his Alpha’s big and bad. He gives just as good as he takes, and he could ride a cowboy like a devil. Working at the pleasure house in Greyhound’s Canyon, Shiloh was planning to pick up his belongings and leave his life in the town of Greyhound Canyon until he met his match.

Michael Cox was a stone-cold killer.

A ruthless bounty hunter with a wiry grin, smoking hot body, and legs that would make even a bull shudder. Shiloh knew he was in for the ride of his life when Michael came to his bed.

It ends just as quickly as it starts and Michael Cox disappears like doused smoke from a fire.

Good riddance. Even though Shiloh’s heart had beaten out of his chest at the mere sight of the black leather-clad Alpha, with his wicked guns and dimpled grin, Michael Cox was the sweetest sin. In the South, we take our whiskey neat, and our scars with a dose of pride.

Shiloh was getting on just fine without him until he was taken in the middle of the night by Michael’s sworn enemies. Can Shiloh survive? Or will Michael have to unleash the animal inside him to get his Omega back?

MM possessive romance books are a popular sub-genre in the LGBTQ+ romance community, and for good reason. These books feature strong, dominant male characters who will stop at nothing to protect and claim their love interest. As a writer and reader of MM possessive romance books, I have found that there are several reasons why we love this genre.

One reason is the intense emotional connection between the main characters. In MM possessive romance books, the protagonists often have a deep, intense bond that is forged through adversity. This bond creates a sense of intimacy and emotional investment in the reader, making it impossible to put the book down.
Another reason why we love MM possessive romance books is the power dynamics between the characters. The dominant male character is often portrayed as the epitome of masculinity, with his strength and protectiveness making him irresistible to the submissive partner. The power dynamic creates tension and excitement in the reader, and the emotional payoff when the submissive partner is finally claimed is deeply satisfying.

Additionally, MM possessive romance books often explore themes of trust and surrender. The submissive partner must trust the dominant character completely, surrendering themselves to their care and protection. This dynamic allows for exploration of vulnerability and intimacy in a safe and consensual way.

Not to mention that MM possessive romance books offer a sense of escapism from everyday life. The intense emotions, high stakes, and steamy scenes provide a thrilling and satisfying experience for readers who want to get lost in a world of passion and romance.

In conclusion, MM possessive romance books offer a unique and exciting reading experience that has captivated readers in the LGBTQ+ community. From the intense emotional connection between characters to the exploration of power dynamics and themes of trust and surrender, there are countless reasons why we love this genre. If you’re looking for a steamy and satisfying read, look no further than MM possessive romance books.

Life On Mars Cover

FBI Files, Book 4

Things aren’t always what they seem.

Special agent, Max Prince, and his boyfriend, Dr. Leo Reeves, are back to work after their first case together. When a prominent Department of Defense scientist kills himself in a mysterious way, their entire FBI team is tasked to figure out if the weapon he was working on was somehow the cause of his death. Things get even more interesting when SAC Lincoln Snow calls in old friends to help. Damon Thorne, formerly of the CIA, and Jarrett and Thayne from the ATF step up help on the premise that their case might have a link to biological terrorism.

It’s so much worse.

Seventy years ago, the CIA began an illegal human experimentation program, code named MKUltra, and the more Leo and Max learn about what Dr. Cummings has been doing for the DOD, the closer they draw parallels to the defunct program. These experiments aren’t the only things the government scientist has been working on. When Jarrett and Thayne go exploring at his house, they discover a secret room which promises to reveal the true nature of what’s happening…and it’s worse than they could’ve imagined.

Evil always targets the most vulnerable.

Just when they think they’ve figured out what’s going on, an old nemesis from the FBI steps in with instructions to shut it all down and take over. All Max knows is, the sudden appearance of a guy their whole team hates, can’t be good, especially when he starts throwing his weight around. Something else is going on here and a cover up is on the tip of everyone’s tongue. To top it all off, an embarrassing ex, an accidental poisoning, multiple break ins, and a couple of bad guys acting like ninjas, add to the utter chaos of this case which promises to be stranger than life on Mars. After all—

Truth is stranger than fiction.

Excerpt:

“Those documents look like the ones we found at Preston Cummings’ house,” Thayne said. He pointed to the ones in front of Leo and several of the agents started murmuring. When the screen changed to a series of photos of people who appeared to be in various stages of poor physical condition, everyone shut up.

“Well, those weren’t included in what we found,” Max drawled.

“Definitely not,” Leo said, leaning forward as Max did the same beside him. He pointed to the screen. “Where’d you find these, Noah?”

“These were hidden on the encrypted laptop you all found out there, Doc,” Noah replied. He continued to type until a picture of an elderly woman holding a cat popped up onto the screen. “This is…was…Doctor Cummings’ mother…and—I assume—her cat. It’s the only photo on the computer at first glance but all these photos were hidden inside it. Further, the data files were hidden within each picture.” Photographs of paperwork that looked exactly like what Leo had been showing them moments before appeared on the screen as Noah continued to type.

Max pointed to the screen. “So those files are the ones you gave to Thorne and are the same ones we found in the filing cabinets?”

“Well, I haven’t seen what you found in the filing cabinets,” Noah said. “Does it look anything like these data files?”

“Yeah,” Max said. “With the exception of the photographs.”

“How’d you find all that information inside one picture on his laptop?” Lincoln asked. His brows were furrowed as he stared at the screen.

“Steganography. It’s simple coding for hiding a file within a picture which simply appears to be a picture to an average user,” Noah said. “You don’t have to be a sophisticated hacker to do it and in fact, you can learn how to do this on YouTube. It leads me to believe that the doctor probably learned how to hide these files and data himself.” He chuckled for a second before clearing his throat.

“What is it?” Snow asked.

“Sorry. I say that he must have used something like YouTube because he was the very definition of low tech. He named his mother’s picture ‘Mama with Gus’ and the files hidden within it are named ‘Hidden Files’ and ‘Nothing to See Here.’”

“That’s kinda cute,” Carter said, squinting up at the screen.

“Yeah…but not cute cute,” Jarrett replied.

Baxter’s Right-Hand Man

Baxters Right Hand Man Cover

The Baxter Chronicles, Book 2

The movie star meets his match…

Pierce

Welcome to Hollywood, baby! Perhaps you’ve heard of me. I play Baxter, the adventure-seeking, crime-fighting hero, adored by fans around the world. Nice gig, right? My job has its perks for sure—private jets, a chauffeur, and the best tables at the fanciest restaurants in town. It’s nuts!

Downside—it’s hard to know who you can trust.

But I trust Lorenzo. He’s funny, sweet, and very real.

Look, I’m not in the market for anything serious. Between my greedy brother and the old man who claims we’re related, I’m a little wary, but I could use a friend.

And a sexy distraction.

Lorenzo

What is happening here? Major movie star, Pierce Allen wants me.

Me!

I don’t get it. I’m too fabulous and he’s too famous.

No, wait. He wants something from me, like my help and maybe my body. This should be a no-brainer. However, closing the last chapter on a long-term relationship has left me feeling a little fragile, and the last thing I need is to risk another broken heart.

But I’m too intrigued to walk away. I can play the part of Pierce’s “right-hand man” and keep things light and friendly. No problem.

I’m way too smart to fall for a movie star.

I hope.

Baxter’s Right-Hand Man is a MM, bisexual romance featuring a sexy, slightly egotistical movie star and the adorable diva who brings him back to reality.

Excerpt:

“So…you’re here. In my apartment.”

“I guess I am.”

“This is weird,” Lorenzo mumbled under his breath.

“Do you want me to leave?”

He shook his head as he gathered some ingredients and set them on the counter. “Don’t be silly. I invited you.”

“Actually, I invited myself when you bragged about this soup.”

Lorenzo chuckled. “That’s true.”

“Can I help?”

“Do you know how to make a salad?”

I cracked my knuckles and made a production of rolling up my sleeves. “Dude. I am hands down the world’s best salad maker. Ever.”

Lorenzo raised a brow. “Here you go…lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber, pepitas, avocado. Do you like those ingredients? Wait, before I attempt to feed you, are there any allergies I should know about? I don’t want to accidentally poison you and end up on the news.”

“Everything sounds good, and no allergies,” I declared, picking up the cucumber and smacking it on my palm.

“No playing with the cucumber, sicko. Here’s a bowl. Knock yourself out.”

I studied the lettuce and frowned. Tear or cut? Cut…probably. I reached for the knife he’d left on the cutting board and tried to decide where to start chopping—middle or end?

“Am I supposed to wash this first?”

“I did that already. But you do need to wash your hands.”

Right. I obeyed and spent more time than necessary drying them methodically as I peeked over his shoulder to watch him stir meatballs into broth.

“Smells good,” I commented.

Lorenzo quirked his lips in amusement. “You don’t know how to make a salad, do you?”

“Uh…I just haven’t done it in a while and the last time I did, I opened a bag and called it a day.”

“You can’t fail at this. Just chop everything and throw it into the bowl.” He squeezed my elbow and winked. “I believe in you, Pierce.”

I released a beleaguered sigh. “All right. Here goes nothin’.”

“So…did you happen to see the photo of us with the hunky firefighters on social media?” he asked as if to break an impending silence.

“No. Is it good?”

“Of you? Yes. I’m not sure how I got in the shot. Or how I ended up being called your assistant,” he huffed with mock annoyance.

My grin split my face in half. “Really? You work for me now? I like the sound of that.”

Lorenzo rolled his eyes. “I bet. My friends were freaking out. Don’t worry. I assured them it was the product of a weird confluence of coincidence.”

I let out a low whistle. “Confluence of coincidence. I’m gonna have to look that up. Um…I hate to ask, but do your friends know I’m here?”

He laughed. “No fucking way. First of all, I wasn’t sure you’d show up. Second, they wouldn’t believe me, and third…no offense, but…you’re not my type.”

I gasped and gestured behind me. “I’m gonna need help pulling that dagger from my back. What’s wrong with me?”

“Nothing at all. Your straight quotient is a tad high, though.”

I snorted. “I’m not straight.”

“No, but you probably like classic rock and have a thing for fast cars.”

“Well, yeah. So?”

“That’s…nice.”

I snickered. “By nice you mean…yuck. Right?”

“Don’t be so defensive. To each his own.” Lo smiled and pointed at the mess of lettuce in front of me. “Cut that a little finer.”

“Bossy, bossy,” I grumbled without heat, loving the melodic sound of his laughter.

We worked quietly, side by side, but it wasn’t a soothing form of silence. Not for me anyway. The air crackled with unspoken questions. What was I thinking? Why do I have butterflies? That sort of thing.

Seriously, I was a little dizzy, and my stomach felt wonky. There was nothing wrong with me, other than having a bad case of the stupids. It took a beat for me to recognize the signs for what they were.

I had a fucking crush on this guy.

That was so…weird.
