MMITB Cover

Hemlock Harbor, Book 1

Meet me… in the place where the sun kisses the horizon and sinks into blue shades of you and me.

Meet me there… where everything was always perfect. You and me and the damp grass at dawn and the gray dirt in the late evening rain.

Meet me where we were ourselves and not these two people who can’t even say I love you.

Meet me there and maybe we’ll remember…

We’ll remember the us we were before them, before miles, before lost hours, and you’ll ask what color the sky is, and I’ll say blue like your eyes.

And you’ll smile, and I’ll forget I ever missed you.

****

Luka and Rook have been best friends since they were nine years old.

Five years ago, Luka threw it all away.

When his dad’s health takes a turn for the worst, Luka must come home to say his goodbyes and mend the bridges he burned all those years ago. But coming home is harder than he imagined, and after reuniting with his family, there’s only one person he needs.

Rook…

His best friend.

The one man he pushed away, the one man, no matter how hard he tried to forget, he can’t stop himself from loving.

Even if loving him means breaking his heart all over again.

Meet Me in the Blue is a stand alone, best friends to lovers, second chance, demi-awakening, MM romance, with a whole lot of small town heart, meddling moms, gossiping townies, self-discovery, a friendship forged of forts, Dungeons and Dragons, and a love that will stand the test of time.

Excerpt:

I pull into a space on Main Street, smirking as I jump out, seeing the old gothic sign above the entrance. Black tattoo font spelling out Marked. Making it stand out amongst the historic stone buildings and tree-lined walkways. Hints of weed mix with blue spruce, filling the air.

Old classic rock music hits me as I push the door. “There’s our boy,” Ruby greets me, her bright blue eyes laughing as she flicks her multicolored hair over her shoulder.

“Hey, girl,”

“Have you eaten?” Not waiting for my answer, she pulls a snack bar out of her drawer filled with junk food, and hands it over. The woman has one hell of a sweet tooth. “You look too skinny.”

I tear the wrapper open, taking a bite, knowing it makes her happy. She leans against the dark receptionist’s desk, giving me a view of my favorite tattoo. It’s a black cat with fur rumpled on its head. Underneath the words “bad pussy,” and it makes my lips curve whenever I see it.

Zane, the owner, steps out of the back area. I swallow my uneasiness as the snack bar gets stuck in my throat. It’s tough seeing Zane, he looks so much like his younger half-brother, Korbin.

Five years older, Zane didn’t come from the elite circle of Hill View but from the same trailer park I live in.

He stops a foot away from us, and the skull on his hand seems to grin as he itches his scruff. “Hey, didn’t expect you in. It’s graduation in an hour.”

“Never been my scene.” I lift one shoulder, feeling my defenses rise.

Today, I should be walking across the stage for my graduation. The school could damn well send it to me in the mail because you’d have more luck shoving a porcupine up my ass than getting me back there.

It had been daily torture to walk down those corridors. I wouldn’t be surprised if they’d planned something for when I got my diploma.

The jokes on them, I’m done being the focus of their cruel entertainment.

In March, I received my acceptance letter. Come fall, I’m off to one of the best art universities—USC. I have a calendar in my room, which I’m marking with big black crosses until I get to say fuck you to Hill View and never look back.

After a beat, Zane lifts his chin. “I Promised Korbin I’d be there. I want you to sketch a butterfly. Let’s see what you’re made of.” Tapping his knuckles on the reception desk, silver rings click against the surface before he walks out.

I turn to Ruby. “Is he serious?”

“Better get a move on,” she winks before answering a call.

Zane has gone retro with the interior, using Jerry the sailor as inspiration. The back wall is black with a partition making it into two workspaces. Both have blood-red beds. The first station has a pin-up sitting in a martini glass on the wall, her legs in a sexy pose, with garters, playing cards surrounding the stem with dice and a bottle of whiskey. A massive scroll underneath has the words “Man’s Ruin” written on it. On the other side are two large cherries. The way Zane has painted them, it seems like someone has taken a bite out of one, and the juice is dripping. Green stalks connect them with the words “Bite Me”.

I go to the back area, which holds two rooms, one for drawing and the other for “Ruby’s Piercing Palace”, as she calls it. I drop my backpack and see Zane jumping in his truck.

“You’re not good enough.”, “Everyone hates you,” hammers in my skull. I try to shake it off and start moving the pencil across the paper, watching as harsh lines appear. It’s where my mind goes numb. A creativeness comes alive and rushes through my veins. My hands move as if someone else is guiding them, transforming the lines as they turn into something beautiful.

Star-Crossed Celestials, Prequel

The line between angel and demon is razor thin. No one knows this better than Kai.

As an Emissary of death, darkness follows Kai like a shadow, leaving him touch-starved and lonely. Tormented by the error in judgment that killed his only love, he accepts an assignment to redeem himself: hunting down the demons destroying the mortal realm. But fate takes a turn, and Kai finds himself drawn to one of his targets instead.

Demonic martial arts expert Byron Black has struggled to survive his entire life. He has fought for every breath he’s taken and each bite he’s eaten, yet in the instant when his demise finally seems inevitable, death incarnate steps forward and spares him. Kai is as beautiful as he is terrifying, and although Byron suspects the angel’s interest in him is more than it appears, he can’t stay away.

Together, the pair search for answers regarding who wants Byron dead—and why—but uncovering the truth might destroy them both in the process. Can Kai defeat his inner demons to save the one that has crawled into his bed?

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

MALAKAI

It wasn’t a demotion. Oberon had said so himself. It wasn’t a punishment, either.

But as Kai shifted on the rusty metal bench, watching the figures trading jabs in the dusty pit before him, it certainly felt like both.

“This is what passes for entertainment in the mortal realm?” he asked the portly male to his left.

For a moment, Nash offered no reply. Kai was unsure if his companion had even heard him. The other male simply stared at the scene below with fascination, carefully following each swing and swift kick exchanged. His hand moved at his side absentmindedly, imitating the quick cutting motions and stabbing thrusts, and he licked his lips with longing, as if he ached to be sparring alongside the fighters.

Finally, Nash glanced at Kai, beholding him as though he were a distraction—a gnat or a fly circling his head.

“Entertainment, yes. For some, anyway.” He blinked and turned back to the match. His hand motions resumed immediately. “For you, however, this is training,” he added without meeting Kai’s stare.

“Training …” Kai echoed, unimpressed.

Crossing his arms over his wide, muscular chest, he watched the figures in the pit continue to attack each other. Blood and sweat dripped from their brows. One fighter’s eye was so swollen from a punch he could barely hold it open. And his opponent seemed to be favoring his left leg, his ankle injured, perhaps.

“Yet it seems so … uncivilized,” Kai mused. His voice was low and soft, barely more than a dull rumble. He’d learned centuries ago that he had no need to speak louder. A murmur was formidable enough when paired with his stark features and dark wings.

“It’s supposed to be uncivilized.” Nash snorted. If Kai’s voice was velvet, his had all the grace of a fraying burlap sack. “It’s demonic martial arts, not the Seraphim ballet.”

“And what, exactly, am I meant to be learning from the demons? I have means of destruction at my disposal that far surpass the strength of any punch or kick.”

As though to prove Kai’s point about demonic inadequacy, one of the fighters promptly took a hard kick to the jaw, spun dazedly, and fell to the ground, spitting blood and teeth. He wallowed in the dirt while the seconds ticked by, chest heaving as he gasped for air. Cheers and clapping rose from the surrounding bleachers, the audience pleased with the turn of events.

Surprisingly, Nash seemed to be right. The spectators truly did find this entertaining.

“You are meant to study the way the demons move. Learn their tricks. Understand the cunning in their ways,” Nash replied.

When the fallen demon slowly drew himself back up to his feet, the crowd let out another roar of approval. The fighter dragged his bare forearm across his mouth, smearing the blood from his cracked lip, then snarled and crouched, poised to launch a counteroffensive on his opponent. His eyes changed color—a blazing amber roiling in his irises. Briefly, a pair of black horns curled up along his hairline to crown him. Then, as he regained his focus, they disappeared, and the demon could almost pass for human once more.

“With all due respect, chancellor, I can take life with a single touch,” Kai said. “I hardly think any of these creatures is a match for me.”

“You may kill with a single touch, Malakai, but will you be able to get close enough to place hands on one of these monsters? That, I doubt.”

Nash’s annoyance was more pronounced now, and a scowl crept across his face. Kai watched the celestial’s profile as he leaned forward in his seat a bit more, redoubling his efforts to focus on the match. He could not have made his lack of interest in anything Kai had to say more apparent than if he’d spoken the words out loud himself.

Kai could take a hint. It was one of the lessons that being more than a millennium old had taught him. He faced forward once more, turning his own attention back to the fight. Although he would never admit it aloud, perhaps Nash had a point. The demons had a way of inflicting maximum injury with minimal contact. Their fighting style relied greatly on push kicks and parrying, not headlocks or nelson holds. They didn’t let their opponent get close enough for such close contact.

This was no concern to Kai, though. Not really, anyway. He was an Emissary, a harbinger of death. If one method failed him, he’d make do with another—his celestial-made sword, perhaps, or the sickly green vapor he could summon when needed. Demons were more difficult to dispatch than mortals. Half-human and half-celestial, they typically inherited their celestial parent’s impressive healing capabilities. A cut could heal within minutes, a broken bone within hours. They could not contract human diseases, and unless wounded with stardust-imbued metals—such as Kai’s sword—they would live indefinitely.

But demons had a weakness they shared with neither of their parents: their souls … or, rather, their lack thereof.

Souls were delicate. They needed to be preserved in mortals so they could withstand their journey to the afterlife.

Narrated by Joel Leslie

It can safely be said that Lord Barnaby Greenwood is not having the best of Christmases.

He’s penniless, up to his eyeballs in debt, and about to lose his estate. Therefore, it’s hardly surprising that when a local property developer offers a lot of money to buy King’s Wood from him, Barnaby is very tempted. But his father had always impressed on him that the green wood was sacred and must be protected at all costs, so he finds himself saying no.

He knows this will result in the loss of his home, but duty comes before everything. However, that fateful decision leads instead to a magical Christmas for Barnaby, complete with an old god who grants him a favour, and a beautiful statue that comes to life.

Cosmo is perfect for him. He’s funny and kind and completely enraptured with Barnaby, and for the first time in his life, Barnaby falls in love. But how can this lead to anything but heartache, when on the last stroke of midnight on Christmas Eve, Cosmo will go back to being a statue and take Barnaby’s heart with him?

Excerpt:

I stare at the builder who is sitting opposite me. His florid face glows in the light, and even as I watch, he runs his handkerchief over his forehead, mopping up the sheen of sweat. Then he folds his arms and directs a belligerent glare at me.

“Listen, Lord Greenwood. I have the utmost respect for you, but the time’s come to stop playing silly games.”

I wonder idly why people always say they have respect for you and then go on to prove the direct opposite but put a polite smile on my face as he carries on with his tirade.

“I want King’s Wood, and I mean to have it.”

I spread my hands and lean back in my chair at my desk. The leather creaks warningly, but like so much about my house, it just squeaks through. “Then we have a problem, Mr Thompson, because I own that wood, and I have no intention of selling it to you. You want to bulldoze it and build housing on the land.”

He glowers. “So? Is there something wrong with building new houses for people who need them?”

“Not at all,” I say mildly. “Only the people you build them for don’t need them, per se, as they are all rather rich. You build mansions and not social housing. Roughly translated, they’ll be clogging up the country lanes with their huge cars, speeding everywhere, and being appallingly rude to the local people as if the simple act of possessing three cars and holidaying in the Maldives automatically puts them out of the reach of politeness.”

He scoffs. “It’s not exactly your business.”

I wrinkle my nose. “It sort of is, Mr Thompson. That wood has been in my family’s possession for hundreds of years. It directly abuts my gardens. My father entrusted it to me with a solemn undertaking to keep it safe. Do you know anything about King’s Wood?” He shakes his head crossly, but I continue. “Druids worshipped there. There is still a circle of ancient stones in the centre about which we know very little.”

Druids,” he says in a tone of disgust. “Are they those funny folks who run around in their nighties?”

“I’m so glad you could sum up our ancient pagan history in just a few words.”

He blows his nose belligerently. “I don’t hold with any of that London nonsense.”

I blink. “Well, it’s actually local business. King’s Wood is sacred land.”

“Bloody ridiculous. It’s prime building land, Lord Greenwood, and I want it.”

“Well, as my old nanny used to say, we can’t always get what we want.” I pause. “It was either her or Mick Jagger.” I smile politely at him. “I feel we are at an impasse.”

A smile crosses his face that instantly makes me nervous. “Well, we’ll see about that.”

“What do you mean by that, Mr Thompson?”

He shrugs, standing up and pulling on his coat. “It means that Mr Watson and I play golf together.”

“You play golf with my bank manager? I’m unsure why that was said in such a threatening manner unless he cheats or steals your balls.” Despite my flippancy, anxiousness stirs in me, and by his smug smile, he knows it.

“Him and me, we’ve had some very interesting chats.”

I sigh. “Spit it out, Mr Thompson. I think we’re finally coming to the point after months of these chats of ours.”

“Mr Watson says that you’re in danger of losing all this.”

He waves his hand to encompass the room, and anger boils inside me at his careless gesture.

“Oh really?” I say silkily.

Men of New York, Book 2

Trey Winters had always been a user. So arrogant and self-centered. Being co-owner of eliXXir, one of the highest profile clubs in Hell’s Kitchen meant he never failed to attract the hottest men around and toss them aside after one encounter. Trey had a life most would envy. One he reveled in, until a mystery man crossed his path one Valentine’s Day, complicating matters both in and outside the bedroom.

He didn’t want to want him.

Didn’t want to need him.

But fate, it would seem, had other ideas.

Noah Middleton craved to express himself the only way he knew how. Reach his full potential, chronic illness be damned. Accepting a place at a prestigious New York dance academy might have made his goal so close he could taste it, but after admitting to his best friend he’d been unable to stop thinking about the beautiful stranger he’d met on his last visit, said friend took it upon himself to play Cupid.

The man was irresistible.

A temptation like no other.

And for Noah, that was the scariest part of all.

Excerpt:

February 14th

Noah Middleton

“Welcome to Hell’s Kitchen, buddy. So great to see you after all this time.” Justin Blake, my best friend in the world, smiled as he closed the door behind us, then drew me in for a hug before taking my overnight bag and setting it down next to the hall table.

“Gee, you didn’t have to get all dressed up on my account.” Justin’s attire drew out my smile. The red boxers and a matching robe hanging loose and open around his slender form left little to the imagination.

“Don’t be dissin’ the outfit, or I just might have to kick your ass. By the way, love the ‘do.” Mussing my hair, Justin laughed.

My chestnut, shoulder length tresses had been cut and bleached to suit a role as James Dean in a dance production about the actor’s life back in San Francisco. I could not have appeared more different than my usual self.

“Thanks,” I said as a behemoth of a guy emerged from the bedroom wearing nothing but a towel wrapped around his waist and a brilliant smile.

“Wes, this is my best friend in the whole world, Noah Middleton. Noah, meet Wes Bradford.”

“It’s great to finally meet you.” Justin had gone on nonstop about the guy I had yet to meet before now.

Wes pulled me in for a hug so tight, I was finding it difficult to breathe. I was doing all I could to keep my junk away from his as well as praying the towel stayed put. Accidental dick touches would be awkward, considering Justin was like a brother to me, and Wes had the potential of becoming his future husband.

“Take it easy, sweet cheeks. You’re going to suffocate the poor boy if you’re not careful.”

I stared at Justin over Wes’s shoulder, and he chuckled, then blew me an air kiss.

“Oops. Sorry.” Wes loosened his grip, eyes filled with apology.

I gave him a smile and straightened my glasses. I usually wore contacts, but my eyes had gotten a little dry during the flight.

“How about we get you settled? We don’t have much time if you want to check out your new school.” Justin picked up my bag and grabbed me by the hand.

After a brief tour of the neat, modern apartment, Justin’s brash taste showing through with the abundance of bright furnishings and unique artwork, Wes headed out, and I was left in my room to change. I got out my medicine cooler and plugged it in. Reaching into my jeans pocket, I pulled out my test kit and gave myself the usual workup, growling out a low, “Fuck,” when my phone buzzed with an incoming call.

The past six months had seen me through a break-up, the excitement of receiving my scholarship, as well as being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Talk about the best and worst aspects of my existence colliding. Mom pitching a fit over the fact I wasn’t about to let a chronic illness stop me from moving to the other side of the country was part of the reason I’d taken the plunge anyway. After all, was it too much to ask to be treated like a regular human being for once?

I sat on the edge of the bed and answered the call.

“Hey.”

“So, you made it there safe and sound? I was getting worried you’d—”

“Go into a diabetic coma on the subway and fall face first onto the tracks? Don’t sweat it, Mom. Everything’s cool.” I heard her let out a huge rush of air.

“If you say so. How’s Justin doing?”

“Great. We’re leaving to check out the school in a few, so that’ll be good.”

“Sounds wonderful. I’m so relieved he’s there to make sure you look after yourself. You will be making an appointment with Dr. Hampson as soon as possible, right.” It was a directive, not a question.

Pinching the bridge of my nose, I heaved a lingering sigh, then stood and began to pace. Her empty nest syndrome had never been quite this chronic.

“Like I said, I’ll do it the second I have time.”

“Well, don’t leave it too long. He’s one of the most sought-after endocrinologists in the city, and you’re overdue to get your HbA1c checked as it is.”

And hadn’t that sentiment been drilled into my skull nonstop ever since I’d told the family about my scholarship to one of the most prestigious up and coming dance schools in the country.

“I’ve been away before and looked after myself just fine, and besides, my blood sugar average was good last time I got tested.” Setting the phone down on the dresser, I put it on speaker, then unzipped my backpack. I took out a clean pair of sweats and a Henley before peeling off my jacket.

“But this is the first time I haven’t been able to get in the car and come see you,” she complained. I’d been based at my family home in L.A. and had flitted between there and San Francisco to perform, but that hadn’t stopped Mom from driving to wherever I was to see me.

“I thought you’d be grateful for the peace and quiet now Charlie’s there cramping your style.”

My older brother by six years, Charlie hadn’t lived under my parents’ roof since marrying his college sweetheart, Zoe. Their subsequent divorce had given him no choice other than to move back home, at least till he got his life together. Since they didn’t have any kids, their split was reasonably amicable, but I knew Charlie still missed his former wife.

“You’d think so, but I have to admit I love having him around again, what with how your father’s been.”

“The old man driving you nuts already, huh?” As I set about changing my clothes, my mother updated me on Dad’s latest quest to figure out what to do with himself since his recent retirement.

“If he doesn’t find a hobby soon, I swear I’ll end him. He tried to bake cookies the other day and almost burned down the house.”

A fit of laughter overcame me. “Oh, please. You love having him around and you know it.”

“Maybe, but he’d better not set foot in my kitchen again if he knows what’s good for him.” There was a smile in her voice. “Anyway, I’d best let you go. Don’t forget to send through some pictures of your new school, all right?”

“Promise.”

Ending the call, I glanced out the window, taking in the sight of the busy street below, grin firmly in place. The hustle and bustle that was New York City was unlike any place on earth, and I couldn’t believe I was going to be in it for good.

Climbing to Believe
By F.A. Ray

Epub Cover

Rock Jocks, Book 1

“You’re going to be the death of me.”

“Then I better make it worth it.”

Ty never planned on sleeping with his biggest climbing idol, but when he gets the chance, is he really going to say no?

As a teen, Ty idolized Elijah Reed for coming out publicly. Now Elijah is here watching Ty climb, and it’s everything Ty fantasized about as a young climber searching for his place in the sport. Elijah might be older than him, but Ty won’t let this man slip away that easily.

When Ty invites Elijah out to dinner, Elijah actually says yes, and Ty knows this is his chance. Elijah could be a lot more than a distant climbing idol if he’d just let Ty get close. But the mere mention of competitive climbing seems to open an old wound. Elijah clearly wishes he was still competing.

Why can’t he?

They could have it all — climbing, each other, even a relationship. That is, if Elijah will let Ty in.

Climbing to Believe is a high-heat, low-angst MM sports romance with an age gap, rock climbing adventures, an idol/fan dynamic, spicy open-door scenes, and a HEA.

Excerpt:

His toe caught. The surface he found to stand on couldn’t have been larger than a marble, but the rubber of his slightly pointed, down-turned climbing shoes clung to it like it was as wide as a six-lane highway. Some of the weight and pressure came off his hands as he shifted his weight onto that tiny, tenuous foot.

Elijah peered up the face of the boulder. The sun was starting to creep over it, glaring right into Elijah’s eyes. He squinted, blinded, body trembling, hands and feet screaming for relief as they perched on razor blades made of rock.

It was the greatest feeling in the world.

If Elijah weren’t gasping for breath, straining every muscle, he’d be whooping with pure joy. There was nothing like being on real rock, nothing like the bite of a boulder, the grit of a fleck of a foot, the strain of glimpsing the crest of the climb but not knowing if you’ll manage to reach it.

He had only seconds before his body gave out. Climbing a boulder was generally a sprint, not a marathon. And this climb had pushed his body to its limit. He’d fallen off dozens of times — not just today, either. Elijah had battled this particular foe many, many times already. He’d never yet won.

Today, a mere foot of rock stood between Elijah and victory. There was no reward awaiting him, no prize or glory to be gleaned. Nothing but the pure intrinsic need to conquer his own limits.

Doing so would require Elijah to push off of that marble-sized foothold and propel his body upward. He’d only get one chance. Once he started moving, there was no way he’d be able to reset. The momentum would rip him right off the microscopic crimp holds keeping him twelve feet off the ground.

“Come on, Elijah,” someone shouted beneath him. “Stay with it.”

Several other voices joined in shouting encouragement up to Elijah. Elijah couldn’t spare a look down at the climbers both rooting for and spotting him, but their words pushed him to give this final move his all regardless. He knew that if he missed he was in for a long fall, but the climbers on the ground had set up large crash pads so he could land safely. And they would spot him so he fell only on those pads and not on the hard ground. Too often, missing or misplaced pads resulted in broken ankles and other injuries, but the folks with Elijah today were all highly proficient climbers with years of experience spotting each other outdoors.

If only things outside were as simple as they were in a gym. There was no substitute for real rock, for sun and air and nature. But Elijah did have to confess that climbing in a gym was sometimes nice simply because the entire floor was made of these squishy crash pads. Injuries weren’t impossible, but they were certainly more rare.

He shook himself, mentally, at least. This wasn’t the time for doubts. This was the time for single-minded focus.

He gazed up again. Even though the sun blotted out his view, he could tell where the rock above him ended. It wasn’t far to the lip. He just had to go for it. Off tiny holds. Twelve feet above the ground.

Come on, he thought. Don’t give up on it. One move.

If I fall, I’m screwed, a voice answered, a voice that had been growing ever louder over the years.
