HOLIDAYS SUCK!, Book 2

Over the river and through the woods, to a vampire’s lair we go.…

Paul and Taviano approach their first Thanksgiving, happy together but wary. Paul frets he’ll one day die and leave Taviano alone, but the demon that shares Taviano’s body won’t even consider turning Paul into a vampire. On top of that, Paul is coming up on the third anniversary of the day his parents kicked him out for being gay. He’s planning a Friendsgiving to distract himself but, wouldn’t you know it, he gets kidnapped first by an unknown vampire.

Taviano frantically searches for his beloved human with the help of some unexpected allies: A newly-turned college student and a vampire doctor who works the graveyard shift at a hospital. Meanwhile, Paul is taunted by a creepy-ass vampire in a terrible track suit who hints he’s important to her mysterious plan. Oh, and the guy who kidnapped him in the first place? Spoiler alert: it’s Bronislav, the Russian vamp who turned Taviano over 170 years ago. What the hell is going on, and what is “the alchemist’s riddle” his captors keep nattering about?

The answer to those questions could change everything Paul and Taviano thought they knew about their love and their future together. Fated mates, a huge age gap (like, 150 years), ancient myths, a found family, a bit of gore — that’s what a holiday should be, right?

Fangsgiving is the second novella in the gay romance trilogy HOLIDAYS SUCK! that began with Vampire Claus. This book can stand alone but is better as part of the ongoing story of Paul and Taviano. It features a heartwarming, happy-for-now ending for a vampire, a young man with a surprising family tree, and the weirdest gathering for a Friendsgiving the world has ever seen.

Excerpt:

Paul swung his heels as he perched on a mahogany table, eager for the moment his boyfriend opened the door to the crypt.

The steel slab mocked him with its bulk. So heavy that it would take at least ten humans to pull it open, it was further secured by the thick bar within that held it shut. The vampire who had originally built the home and crypt over one hundred years earlier had been pretty paranoid, Paul figured, to construct such a safe room for himself.

“C’mon,” he muttered, glancing again at his wristwatch. The elegant hands of his Piaget indicated it was four twenty. Sundown was supposed to be at four twenty-seven that day; he’d checked. All summer, it had been torture waiting for Taviano, when the sun refused to set before eight-thirty at night. Then he’d lose their morning together because Taviano had to be back in his lair at the asscrack of dawn. Now, in November, after the clocks were reset, he could have so much more time with his Tall-Dark-and-Fanged man, with the nights growing still longer for a while. And Paul was greedy for every moment.

He pulled from his jeans pocket a mini candy bar left over from the Halloween party they’d hosted for the neighbors weeks ago. Biting into the slightly stale chocolatey goodness, he chewed thoughtfully. It rankled that, although they had been together for more than ten months, Taviano still would not permit Paul to sleep with him in the secured, windowless vault where he spent the day.

“But babe,” Paul had tried, “your demon-thingy likes me even though it doesn’t want to make me a vamp. It wouldn’t eat me.”

“We can’t be sure of that,” Taviano had answered in that low, sexy baritone, his Italian accent making Paul squirm. “We have been very lucky, yes. The demon that shares this body is aware of how important you are to me. Yet who knows what might happen while I sleep? I could crush you accidentally, or even bite you if my sleeping mind perceives you as a threat.”

At the thought of being bitten, Paul shivered. Yet another thing Taviano had denied him so far. No matter how much he moaned and pleaded in moments of passion, Taviano wouldn’t drink blood from him. It would be super hot, Paul was certain, to feel those needle-sharp fangs pierce his neck just as he was ready to come. Imagining the sensation, he had to shift as his cock stiffened in his tight jeans.

Well, he’d just keep at it until he wore Taviano down.

Winter Magic, Book 2

What happens when a player gets played?

Actor Dylan Frasier is known as one of the biggest playboys in Hollywood, infamous for seducing men and women alike. He’s also half in love with his two best friends. Unfortunately, Jason and Ben are madly in love with each other, leaving Dylan the odd man out. When Ben suggests an extended Christmas vacation at a resort modeled after his favorite 80s TV show, Dylan reluctantly agrees. Sure, his heart breaks a bit every time he sees them together, but it’s a vacation in the Bahamas. How bad can it be?

At first, the resort seems like any other. Dylan plans to work on his tan, get laid, and hunt for Hollywood’s most in-demand director – not necessarily in that order. Then he meets Connor, a tennis instructor still hurting from a bad breakup. Connor knows Dylan’s reputation and refuses to be seduced. Dylan sees Connor as just another conquest, but this tropical island isn’t as mundane as it appears. It has its own kind of magic, and it’s about to make things interesting.

Excerpt:

They say insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. It must be true. God knows it could only be insanity that made me agree to this vacation. Why else would I spend the next thirty-one days with Jason and Ben knowing it’ll result in nothing but heartache? I love them both so much it hurts. Watching them together is like feeling my heart slowly shatter over and over again, and yet I can’t stand to stay away from them either.

So here I am, on an airplane with them two days after Thanksgiving, bound for a tropical resort, Christmas be damned. We’d debated flying first class, but we were already spending a fair amount on this month-long vacation, so we settled for business class instead. Still not enough leg room for my six-foot-one body, but the drinks are free, so I’m not complaining.

“I’m so excited,” Ben says. “Can you believe we’re actually going to Fantasy Island?” He’s sitting between Jason and I on the airplane, having volunteered for the middle seat. Even now, almost two years after his miraculous appearance in Jason’s life, Ben comes across all innocence and bright-eyed enthusiasm. He’d sent off for a paper brochure from the resort because he said reading it on his phone was “dumb.” Watching him flip through it, I wonder if he’ll ever become as jaded as the rest of us.

I hope not.

Jason Walker is a child star turned teen heartthrob turned reluctant B-movie regular who’s sick of his failing career. So he gives up Hollywood for northern Idaho, far away from the press, the drama of LA, and the best friend he’s secretly been in love with for years.

There’s only one problem with his new life: a strange young man only he can see is haunting his guesthouse. Except Benjamin Ward isn’t a ghost. He’s a man caught out of time, trapped since the Civil War in a magical prison where he can only watch the lives of those around him. He’s also sweet, funny, and cute as hell, with an affinity for cheesy ’80s TV shows. And he’s thrilled to finally have someone to talk to.

But Jason quickly discovers that spending all his time with a man nobody else can see or hear isn’t without its problems—especially when the tabloids find him again and make him front-page news. The local sheriff thinks he’s on drugs, and his best friend thinks he’s crazy. But Jason knows he hasn’t lost his mind. Too bad he can’t say the same thing about his heart.

Leo on Fire

FBI Files, Book 2

Some days, fighting crime, just doesn’t pay.

FBI Profiler, Leo Reeves, has settled into his new job and his new life in Los Angeles. Working with Max Prince every day in the office is fulfilling but not as satisfying as burning up the sheets with him every night at home. Their first case together as partners resulted in the bad guys either behind bars or six feet under, but neither man thinks they’ve put an end to the murderous ring. As time goes on, and they interview the ones they did manage to arrest, the agents realize a much larger organization is at work.

Could a criminal mastermind be controlling multiple cells of murderers?

When one of their team is gunned down in a senseless mass shooting, Leo and Max are fueled by a new motive…rage. As more of the corpses from their first case are identified, new information about the kidnapping ring begins to emerge. When they realize copycats are mirroring the work of famous serial killers, things go from bad to worse. For Leo, working as a profiler has always been his passion but he begins to rethink everything when one copycat starts skinning his victims.

When they connect the gunman to a notorious criminal biker gang, things get even uglier.

On top of everything else, Max’s past comes back to bite him when his sweet pooch is threatened by a stalker. And if they haven’t led a life filled with complications until now, Leo and Max learn an old nemesis of Snow and McCallahan is connected to the case. From the Metropolitan Detention Center in downtown L.A. to the scorching deserts around Victorville, criminals seem to be coming out of the woodwork to mess with them both.

Excerpt:

“There’s something Noah didn’t tell you about all these victims,” Snow said. Everyone quieted and turned toward their boss. “There’s another thing that ties all five of them together. The coroner believes that being shot in the back of the head was a final act and in the case of some of these victims, the cause of death.”

“What else would have caused it?” Beth asked.

Snow blew out a long breath. “It seems these five victims were a mirror of other serial killers’ crimes.” He turned and looked directly at Leo. “I’m sorry. One of these victims was skinned.”

Leo felt all the blood drain out of his face at once. His stomach heaved, and he began to hear a whooshing sound in his ears. He sucked in a long, slow breath, doing his best not to concentrate on the way his head was suddenly spinning. Someone squeezed his thigh, and he looked down at the big male hand and then up at Max. He sat beside him looking so pained, he’d only seen that expression once before, when his partner had seen the little boy about to be murdered by Svetlana right in front of them.

“Breathe, Leo,” Max whispered.

“What’s going on?” Perez asked.

Leo tore his gaze away from Max and looked over at his big friend. He was staring at him and then shifted his gaze to Max when he got no response. Next, he turned to look at Lincoln.

“What’s going on, Lincoln?” Perez asked again.

When his gaze connected with his boss, Leo gave a small nod.

“All of these victims were copycat crimes of a serial killer from the past. In one case, two lovers were parked in their car on a street at night and were shot through the glass. Those wounds were inflicted with a .44 caliber. Particular attention was paid to the female victim as she was shot multiple times.

Love in No Man’s Land Series, Book 1

Mal

I thought I was good with my life in No Man’s Land. Truth be told, I was, until I messaged Bear.

What started as an onlinedebate about coffee vs wine, has become something so much more, it doesn’t even matter that I don’t know his real name and have never seen his face. My daughter doesn’t agree.

She wants me to find someone “real” before she leaves for college, so when the neighborshot brother rolls into town, she’s less than subtle about my single status.

Bobby is a free spirit, man in every town, according to his sister, but that’s not really him. He’s fun, adventurous, kind, and he’s a fantastic flirt, so when the similarities between Bear and Bobby start to align I can hardly believe my luck.

Can my online crush really be the guy next door?

Bear

I never wanted to come back to Nomanland, traveling the world is everything to me, but the money has almost run out and I’m in desperate need of a sponsor that doesn’t make me cringe.

My sister thinks I’m crazy for not wanting to settle down, and when I told her about chatting online with Mal she basically gave me the whole catfish creeper tv-special warning and begged me not to try to meet him for real.

Not that Mal would want to come to Nomanland. I can’t see what this small town has to offer anyone, that is until Michael takes it upon himself to show me the beauty of this town I’d chosen to forget.

Michael owns the local café, he’s a fan of puns, is an amazing dad and loves travel, though he’s never actually been anywhere… just like Mal.

I tell myself I must be crazy, because if Michael really is Mal, how long has he known? Was Meg right? Did I come back to Normanland just to get my heart broken, or could Mal really be the happy beginning I never knew I needed?

Excerpt:

A harsh afternoon light spilled through the rickety window, waking Omar up from a sticky, uncomfortable sleep. From the bright blue heavens the light came, ricocheted off the golden dome of the Al-Aqsa Mosque, then speared him straight in the eye like the sharp end of a sundial. In these summer days, the light disturbed long, lazy afternoons an eighteen-year-old free of responsibilities should enjoy. Omar rolled over, wrapped in damp, sweaty bed sheets to face the stone wall, smacking the radio on in the process. Omar had hoped for some James Brown or even Aretha, but it was The Monkees who crackled on Israeli radio station from across the fortified border in West Jerusalem. The Israeli repeater was so weak though that on a foggy day the signal couldn’t even make it past the Mandelbaum Gate, the one crossing uniting two halves of the divided world. On those winter days, Omar would be forced to climb to the roof to pick up a bit of pop music coming down from Damascus or swept on a westerly wind from Amman. East Jerusalem really was the last place on earth to hear a good pop song.

But not today. The Monkees would do fine for this warm June afternoon. With his eyes clamped shut against the harsh light, Omar hugged the stone wall, sucking up all the coolness the Jerusalem stone had to offer. Yet sleep would not come again. The music drowned out most of the noise of Al-Isfahani Street below his window; mainly the motorbikes of the marketmen screeching a shortcut through what by all rights should be a quiet residential road. But The Monkees couldn’t cover the roars of diesel troop trucks or shouts of militarized Arabic coming from the Rockefeller Museum next door, or indeed the wail of the Muezzin which woke him most mornings long before sunrise and now heeded the call for afternoon prayer.

“Is that boy still in bed?” His father shouted from beyond the door of his room. Omar quickly shut off the Hebrew-speaking disc-jockey talking now the song had finished, but even his father’s angry roar couldn’t cover the shrieks from downstairs.

His mother and aunts in the kitchen laughed as women alone do. Omar rolled out of bed in only his vest and shorts, a deep hunger rumbling in his stomach amplified by the enchanting, earthy stench of unraveling vine leaves from the kitchen. If there was anything positive to look forward to in the wedding of his elder brother Hussein, and there was very little, Omar had concluded, it was the food. Pots of yaprach, pots and pots of it. Oil drums full even; of the overcooked sticky leaves stuffed with meat and rice turned deliciously clumpy and patchila from a night and a day being cooked on the gas. That’s what he had to look forward to at the walima feast tomorrow night.

Omar avoided the sight of the teeming walls of the old city just two streets away as he washed his face in the basin beneath the window, glad to hear the familiar slam of his father’s office door downstairs. The Dome of the Rock stood large and imposing from Omar’s view of the northern edge of the old city; beyond Herod’s Gate and the winding alleyways of the Arab souk leading all the way up to al-Ḥaram al-Šarīf where his father and Hussein and all the cousins and uncles and great-uncles and general well-wishers to the family—the ones who loved to say how they had not seen Omar since he was a baby—would soon be gathered for endless prayers before the evening’s nikah ceremony at the mosque.

Tonight’s food would only be tea and cookies and cakes; he’d spied his mom and grandmother making trays of baklava yesterday for the evening’s ceremony, but that didn’t much interest Omar. He’d already stolen a tray of baklava, the foil poked out from under his bed. He gave a quick kick to shove it back under. The food this evening—if tea and snacks could even count as food—was the same standard fare they ate to break their Ramadan fasts. Not that Omar had ever fasted a full day in his life. During the month of Ramadan, he went from place to place around the city, uncovering the secret stashes of wrapped biscuits or bread he’d hidden behind loose stones or window shutters.

No, it was tomorrow’s walima feast that Omar was most interested in, and the vague promise from his aunt Zuhal of an entire pot of yaprach for himself. His mother’s sisters, even his ageing grandmother, had traveled from Kurdistan for Hussein’s wedding. They weren’t going to come all this way and not do the one thing women from Zakho knew how to do best: roll yaprach and swap gossip. From the shrieking downstairs rising like the summer heat, it sounded like there was plenty more rolling to be done.

Moonlight Prophecies, Book 3

Cat shifter Luke and rat shifter Preston have had a solid relationship for ten years, but lately, the increasing attacks on their pack and the stress of raising their adopted daughter are highlighting more of their differences than the values they have in common. When they travel to Glenwood to investigate the source of the ancient artifacts tied to the recent violence, tensions in the shifter community—and their relationship—are already running high.

Strangely, this mystery seems tied to the events that brought them together. On their first mission, eighteen-year-old Luke and twenty-one-year-old Preston had to put aside their differences—and back-burner their mutual attraction—to prevent a disaster that would have revealed the existence of shifter kind to humans.

But how does what’s happening now connect to their past? And can they find the answers their pack, their species, and their relationship need to survive?

Excerpt:

Chapter 1

“Wow, the architecture here is badass!”

Preston followed Luke and Jesse out of the parking garage to better take in the view of downtown Glenwood. They’d driven from Centrus City since there wasn’t a direct train route like from Centrus to Brookdale, and three plane tickets wouldn’t have been worth the short distance.

Glenwood was impressive, with more skyscrapers than either of the other cities and an Old World feel like it might have been a century in the past if not for several more modern buildings. Old stonework with carved designs and even lions or gargoyles peering down at them from several stories up was just as common as reflective glass, and everything had a gray or black look to it that said as soon as the sun set, they might as well be in Transylvania.

“How… gothic,” Preston said, brushing aside the strands of hair that had fallen loose from his disturbed bun, since he’d been the one driving all afternoon.

Jesse didn’t respond. She had her arms crossed in front of her, with shoulders hunched in typical annoyed teenage fashion.

“Come on, you two.” Luke threw an arm across her shoulders. “No being sourpusses while we’re on vacation!” For a werecat, he had the temperament of an overactive puppy, which on a good day, Preston adored, but on a bad, sort of made him wish he could lock Luke in a kennel.

Jesse was more the temperamental type, but instead of an alley cat, she was a tiger, and their very recently adopted daughter.

Preston, or rather, Preston James Rathaway III, wondered what his parents would think of finally having a grandchild only for it to be their gay son having adopted from the cat tribe. They were the epitome of traditionalists, preferring to keep to rat shifter circles. Preston didn’t talk to them anymore, hadn’t in years, but maybe he’d send a Christmas card, just to imagine the look on his mother’s face when she saw him happier than ever with his found family.

Well, “happy” was subjective lately. Ever since Jesse moved into the den, Preston and Luke hadn’t agreed on much of anything, other than this trip, which wasn’t starting off all that great, given Jesse looked like she wanted to crawl back into the car and hide.

“This isn’t exactly a vacation,” Preston reminded them, adjusting his glasses more out of habit than crookedness. “We have official circle business to attend to.”

As Centrus City’s Magister in charge of all things magic related, Preston often took on complicated mysteries of unknown origin, and Luke, the city’s Councilor, who watched over community relations, knew best how to get even the most closed-off pack members to open up. They had been tasked by their Alpha, Bashir “Bash” Bain, to discover where a suspicious set of creation tablets had come from, which depicted the history of shifter-kind. All they knew currently was that the tablets had been sent to Brookdale from a museum in Glenwood, though with no idea who originally donated them.

Solving a mystery together had been how Preston and Luke first got to know each other after taking on their roles in Centrus City’s circle almost a decade ago.

Luke cast Preston a sharp look, and his blue eyes flashed to shifter Stage One. The intensity enhanced his youthful attractiveness, with ginger hair and the hint of strawberry blond highlights, an echo of his tabby-striped cat form. He was shorter in stature, barely five foot eight, and therefore, one of the smallest of their pack’s inner circle, other than Preston, who was five foot six. But while Preston had an average build, Luke had a lankier litheness to him that betrayed his feline heritage.

Which included an occasional burst of temper.

Luke jutted his chin toward Jesse, and Preston had to admit he was the one at fault this time, since Jesse needed support.

“However,” Preston amended, stepping up to Jesse’s other side, “we will also make time to see the sights and… have fun.”

Jesse snorted but allowed a small smile as she leaned against Luke. Her dark hair with its streak of blue contrasted Luke’s ginger as she easily succumbed to his casual physicality.

To any passersby, they probably looked more like siblings than child and parent, but Luke and Preston were technically old enough to have a thirteen-year-old daughter—if they’d had her when they were young teens themselves.

“Buck up, pixie girl,” Luke tried once more to coax her from her funk. “I thought you wanted to visit.”

“I did. I just haven’t been back here since….”

Since her parents died.

A car accident over a year ago had claimed both their lives while she was at school, and since she had no other living relatives, she’d ended up at Glenwood’s Shelter—the place in each city where shifters without any other place to go or who couldn’t control their shifts were allowed to live under pack protection. As Preston understood it, Jesse had asked to be transferred to Centrus City after the first month.

“I really wanted to get away back then,” she continued, “but I was missing home and thought… I don’t know.” She rested her head more snugly against Luke’s shoulder. “You were always from Centrus, right?”

“Born and bred.”

“What happened to your parents?”

Preston watched a thin smile overtake Luke’s expression. Neither of them talked about their families, and for good reason—they weren’t nice stories.

“I don’t really remember them,” Luke said. “I was a lot younger than you when I ended up at the Shelter. I’m sure having memories of your parents makes things tough, but it’s also good to have them, right?”

Jesse hesitated but eventually said, “Yeah, I guess. What about you?” She glanced at Preston. “You never lived in the Shelter.”

“No. My family is alive, but trust me, having no memories of them would be better. Come on.” Preston indicated the hotel behind them, where they would be staying while they were in town. “If we want to get to any vacationing, we need to handle our assignment first.”

He headed in that direction, but slowly to allow Jesse and Luke to catch up. Preston wasn’t as physically affectionate as Luke, but although Luke had always been understanding of that where it concerned him, he kept passing disapproving glances at Preston for holding back with Jesse—like now.

Swallowing a sigh, Preston reached out to gently squeeze Jesse’s shoulder.

She smiled and briefly leaned into his side like she had Luke’s.

Preston hated when Luke was right, especially when he looked so smug afterward.

“Why didn’t you bring Basil and Dr. Dawson?” Jesse asked.

Those were Preston’s most treasured rat companions, who were family as much as pets. Rodents he had a connection with tended to live longer, but even then, they rarely lasted more than five to ten years max. Before Basil and Dawson, he’d had a different set of rat friends.

“Hotels tend to frown on that,” he said, and Jesse snorted.

The hotel in question was as gothic as the other buildings on this block, refurbished but not too outlandish, providing both sensibility and a show of wealth from Glenwood’s circle, since they would be footing the bill. Inside the high-ceilinged lobby, waiting for them, was Glenwood’s Alpha, Kate Romero, and her Second—

“Jude!” Luke exclaimed, neglecting any sense of decorum as he bounded toward their old friend and embraced him by practically leaping into his arms.

Jude Marley was a fox shifter, which technically put him in the wolf tribe with Kate, though it was rare for a wolf-run city to let foxes be so high ranking—aside from Bash’s circle in Centrus, which was a mix of almost every tribe.

Jude easily encompassed Luke in a hug, being nearly a head taller than him, with long ginger hair, a shade lighter than Luke’s, amber eyes, and a trim beard.

“Hey there, Kitten!” Jude exclaimed just as jubilantly.

To Kate’s credit, she didn’t look at all put out by the casual display. She too was a young Alpha, since all Alphas in the three major cities had been replaced within the last decade or so—Glenwood’s, Kate’s father, who passed away, Brookdale’s, who retired and left things to Jeffrey “Jay” Russell, and Centrus City’s, Bash’s father, who Bash personally killed to usurp.

Kate had the sort of biker-chick look that reminded Preston of fellow circle members back home, Deanna and Siobhan. She had a darker complexion, with a dark shorter hairstyle, not quite shaved on the sides like common fashion, but still longer on top like a 90s teen boy heartthrob. While taller and trim like an androgenous model, there was no doubt by the way she held herself that she could clobber anyone who foolishly tried to pick a fight.

“Wow,” Jesse muttered as they approached at a slower pace. “I forgot the hotness factor.”

“For which one?” Preston asked.

“Both. Definitely both.”

That brought a smile to Preston’s face that he fought to not let crumble into a sneer. Kids sure had it different these days, more allowed to explore what and who, if anyone, they were attracted to. Not to say it was easy, but he did envy them sometimes.

“Jude.” Preston nodded and shook the fox’s hand once his mate was no longer attached to him. “Madame Alpha.”

“Kate’s fine,” she said, shaking Preston’s hand next. “It’s good to meet you, Mr. Rathaway. And Mr.….” She frowned, not knowing Luke’s surname, which was common.

“Legally it’s Smith, since I don’t know what it actually was.” Luke shrugged. Smith or Jones were common choices for orphans at the Shelter when forging paperwork. “But if you’re Kate, then we’re just Luke and Preston.”

“You obviously already know my Second,” she said.

“For almost, what, ten years now?” Luke finally remembered his manners and shook Kate’s hand too. “Man, are we getting old!”

“I’d argue,” Jude said, assessing Jesse between them, “but I never expected you two to adopt. Nice to see you again, Jesse. I’m glad Centrus led you to a good home—though I don’t know if I can truly vouch for these two.” He winked.

The way she averted her eyes without the usual snarky comment said plenty about how attractive she found him. “They’re not so bad.”

“How are you, Miss Kane?” Kate asked. “Or is it something new now?”

“Please,” Jesse scoffed, “and let them force a hyphen on me? So lame.”

Preston would have teased they’d do it anyway for that comment alone if he didn’t remember having the same holier-than-thou attitude about being “cool” at her age.

“Hey, man, how’s your sister?” Luke asked with a smack to Jude’s arm.

A squeal was heard before heeled feet bounded toward them with audible warning clicks.

“Ask yourself,” Jude said and knowingly stepped aside to grant entry for Jordana Marley, who leapt into Luke’s arms even more raucously than Luke had leapt into Jude’s.

“Kitten!” she cried. “Oh my God, you look amazing!”

The jaw-drop from Jesse proved she hadn’t yet met Jude’s sister, who had identical coloring to her brother, including waist-long ginger hair. If Jude was basic casual, and Kate a biker chick, then Jordana was the odd one out, as if she’d stepped from the screen of any Real Housewives episode, though without the excess makeup or blatant fakeness.

Not that Preston had ever watched any of that—willingly.

“Hey, foxy woman, I was hoping we’d see you!” Luke greeted.

Unlike Jude, who’d respected Preston’s self-imposed bubble, Jordana glomped onto him next. “And Fievel! Your hair is getting so long! You should totally wear it down—”

Preston swatted her from pulling loose the tie from inside his tangled bun. “Oh no. You can fuss when I don’t have hours’ worth of car ride on me.”

She pouted at the denial but didn’t try again. “And this must be Jesse. Look at you!” She rebounded, pulling Jesse in for a slightly less resistant hug than Preston and was even allowed a near immediate twirl of her fingers through Jesse’s blue streak. “Rocking the badass punk look like my Kate, huh? You are too precious.”

Jesse’s understandable shock from meeting the whirlwind that was Jordana was likely to blame for her once again not throwing up defenses—or because Jordana was a literal bombshell. “Are you part of the Glenwood circle too?” Jesse asked.

Jordana flew to the other side of their tight gathering and affixed herself to Kate. “Only as mate and whisperer in ears on occasion. Glenwood pack dynamic sort of frowns on mated pairs both being in the circle. Unlike Centrus City’s blatant nepotism,” she added in mock-whisper.

“Hey!” Luke defended. “Bash chose us for our roles before we mated.”

“And that lasted all of a few days, if I remember.”

“That was a long time ago,” Preston said.

“Yeah, you two weren’t even legit back then.” Luke nudged Jude, indicating the… profession the two had had when they first met them.

“Like any of us are wholly legit now.” Jude chuckled back.

Being professional thieves was a bit different from mob-like business dealings, but not by much.

Jesse’s curious glances between them would likely demand explanations later, but for now, Preston was glad to have Kate as another voice of reason.

“Let’s continue this away from prying ears,” she said, placing a hand on Jordana’s that was curled around her arm. “We’ll treat you to a late dinner and fill you in. Your things?”

“Still in the car,” Preston said. “We figured we’d grab everything after we checked in.”

“Then let’s get you settled. We have a lot to tell you.”

Excerpt:

Wade knew one thing though. He was making some changes and it was starting with Cody Prescott. After today.

After today, he wasn’t rushing to Cody whenever he called. That era was over. In the last six months or so, it had become painfully obvious that Cody Prescott had no idea Wade existed except as a walking tool box.

Except the fact that he suggested you move in with him, that irritating voice reminded him.

Cody was always about to fall in love or mooning over a random hot guy he’d seen on the ferry. Once it was the new Food Services of America sales bro with his RayBan sunglasses. And his brown eyes lit up when Chief Flynn stopped by for the biannual safety inspection, in a way Wade knew they never did when Cody looked at him.

Leaving his bulging rucksack locked in the truck, Wade slammed the door, jiggling the handle so it would shut properly, and jammed his hands into the extra-thick semi-weatherproof Carhartt hoodie Cody had given him as “sort of a bonus” after Wade had complained about how fucking drafty his studio was.

Yeah, and the socks too. So, he does think about you, his inner voice snarked.

Whatever. However Cody thought of him, it wasn’t the way Wade wanted him to. Just one of these days Wade wanted Cody Prescott to look at him with the same hunger in his eyes that he had when a suited-up or otherwise expensively dressed guy with sunglasses on his head and a Rolex on his wrist strode into the resort, brandishing their American Express Black cards and platinum wives or girlfriends.

Bitter much?

Wade was rough. His hair was longer than the guys Cody looked at wore theirs. After separating from the military, he’d sworn he would never keep it short again. His razor hardly ever saw use. Wade’s clothing came from Costco, his work boots from Red Wing, and he didn’t have designer soap or fancy aftershave. He was plain old Wade Buckner, a low-end model for a boyfriend.

Excerpt:

“Are you all prepared for Christmas?” Dee—my roommate and number one chief helper with my two girls—asked. “You’ve seemed on edge the last few days?”

I took a peep of my twin girls coloring away together at the dining room table, designing their Christmas cookies that we were planning to make later for Santa. I indicated for Dee to join me in the kitchen so that we could have some privacy.

“Girls,” I called to Riley and Ana. “Aunty Dee and I are just going to make a drink. If you need us, just shout.” I turned to enter the kitchen. “I can’t wait to see what you come up with.”

“They are good girls,” Dee began, “and even the social worker said that you’re doing a fantastic job in fostering them. I’m so excited that you’re taking the next step and looking at full time residency with them.” Dee paused to pour us two glasses of coke, passing one to me before she spoke again. “Is that what has been on your mind?”

“A little,” I admitted. “I’ve put the offer on the new house but I wanted Christmas to be perfect,” I said in a whispered tone just as a text came through on my phone. I quickly read the message and looked across at the girls and then back to Dee. “I could still make it perfect.”

I showed Dee my phone and a massive smile graced her lips. She nodded and I could see that a plan was already starting to come together in her head as she played with her bright red locks.

“Go, before the weather changes anymore. I’ll message Walker and get the night off at work. He owes me anyway.” She smiled sweetly at me before she looked over at the two girls. “The forecast of this snow is getting bad but I’m guessing it’s a few hours out.”

“Yeah, Pennsylvania. I can be back tomorrow night if I set off early enough. Liv—my sister—and Matt arrives tomorrow for the Christmas break. I’m sure after they’ve gone to find Hardin at North Avenue Live, she’ll come across to see the girls,” I said nonchalantly as I seriously contemplated traveling to Maple Oaks Acres just to collect a puppy to complete my girls’ Christmas. “You know Liv won’t want to be stuck with her brother-in-law, Hardin and have the two of them talking business.” Dee rolled her eyes at that. Every time that Hardin and Matt got together in a room, it’s usually for them to not talk about the bars they own or what latest venture is on the cards.

I knew that the puppy would be the perfect gift to support my commitment to them both and tell them that if they wanted a forever home with me, then they could have it. Even though I was only thirty years old and people automatically questioned my life when they saw me with my four-year-olds. My girls had shown me that if you’re willing to give a little, then the rewards you reap can be huge.

I knew what the pain of rejection from the majority of my family—barring Liv—felt like and I couldn’t bear to see others go through what we did.

“Kellan, just go,” Dee replied before she pulled me into a hug. “Go and say goodbye to the girls,” she whispered into my ear, “and we’ll have the time of our lives while you’re gone. Trust me.”

“I don’t know what I’d do without you,” I said truthfully as I kissed her cheek, making her blush before I headed over toward the girls. I ran my hand over their silken blond heads before I spoke. “Hey, you two. How would you like to have some special time with Aunty Dee while I go and do a job?”

“Yayyyy!” the duo chorused together, making my heart swell. “We’ll have the best time. Be careful though.”

“Of course, I will. You too.”
