ISAAC

There are enemies all around and I’m in the hands of the worst ones my club has ever faced. I have to keep fighting, despite the darkness that’s swallowing me whole. I have to live because dying would destroy him.

THANATOS

I never expected to fall for Isaac, but he’s fast become my reason for breathing. I’ll stop at nothing to save his life, even if it means risking my own. He’s mine and no one is ever taking him from me.

Thanatos

I hit the tarmac hard enough to bruise. My hands bound behind my back make it impossible for me to soften the blow as I smash into the ground, rolling a few times before I come to a sudden stop.

I lie stunned for a brief moment, my chest aching, my hips throbbing. Fuck.

Then, I remember Isaac.

Scrambling awkwardly to my knees, my gaze seeks him out, but he’s not on the road next to me. My eyes shift towards the van that is getting further and further away.

Isaac is nowhere to be seen.

He didn’t get out of the van.

That lump of meat in my chest that has only just started to beat again gets a fucking workout as it begins to gallop.

Heat and cold rises simultaneously in my body as I lurch up to my feet and sprint after the van.

I can hear the bikes behind me, can hear the rumbling of the pipes getting closer as the back of the van disappears off the horizon. I keep running, fear nipping at my heels, but it’s too late. I’m too late.

Fuck. Fuck. Fuck.

I drop back to my knees, not caring about the pain that ricochets through my legs. I failed him. I let Garrett take him.

A pain lances through my chest that steals my breath. I’m going to have a heart attack. Everything feels tight, wrong.

Empty.

“Boss!”

I ignore the voice yelling at me, ignore everything but the last spot on the horizon where I saw the van.

“Than?”

A hand drops on my shoulder and I spin to see Hades. His mouth is pinched as he takes me in.

“You hurt?” he demands.

I can see my other brothers abandoning their bikes and rushing in my direction.

“Get after that van.”

The words are garbled. Hard to understand. My tongue feels too big for my mouth, my brain disconnected. Panic like I haven’t felt since Tillie was taken claws at my heart.

“Where’s Isaac?”

My eyes go to Spider as he jogs up to us.

“They took him.” I never thought anything could hurt more than losing my sister, but fuck, I was wrong. I’m drowning in blood right now, the blood of the people I’ve failed to protect. Whatever happens to Isaac is on my head.

“Who took him?” Spider’s voice is raw, because he already knows the trouble his brother is facing. He already knows the man who took him, and what he’s capable of.

“Garrett and his bastards.”

Hades pulls out a knife and cuts through the ties on my wrists. Free, I stumble to my feet.

“We have to go after them. Where’s my fucking bike?” I don’t miss the desperation in my tone, the sheer panic as I peer around, trying to see it. When I don’t, I start towards the nearest hog, intending to go after him.

“No, I’ll go,” Hades says. He gestures to Shakespeare and Weaver. “You’re with me.”

I want to argue, but my legs choose that moment to give out. Spider reaches out and grabs me, stopping me from hitting the ground, but my weight drives us to the tarmac anyway.

Ice clogs my veins as the three bikes roar off up the road in the direction the van went. I don’t fucking believe in a higher power, but if it saves Isaac’s life I’ll get on my knees and I’ll fucking pray. I know what Garrett is capable of, the hurt he will inflict on Isaac just to destroy me. I know it because I’ve seen it before. His men had broken my sister one piece at a time. They’d raped her, drugged her, shattered her like glass.

I can’t do this again.

Pick Me Cover

The Sunday Brothers, Book 1

The job at Sunday Orchard was supposed to be temporary.

A chance to gain some work experience. To have some fun. To get away from my overprotective brothers. To maybe, possibly encounter some lumberjacks in their natural habitat before moving on to the dream career that awaited me in the city.

I had not expected to be welcomed into a family of gorgeous and weirdly efficient lumberjack-types myself. Or to find a purpose in the tiny Vermont town whose claim to fame seemed to be apple-based products and copious amounts of charm.

And I most definitely hadn’t expected to fall for Knox Sunday, my grumpy, burly, fifteen-years-older, reluctant roommate, with his infuriating lectures, his hot-as-fire body, his superior attitude, his snarky humor, and his stealth cuddles.

Now I find myself making excuses to delay my big dreams… just for a little while.

But Knox has unfulfilled dreams of his own. A career he walked away from. A big city life in Boston he left behind when he returned to his hometown to help his family. He claims he’s not looking for anything permanent, and I’ve never been one to put down roots.

My big life is waiting for me somewhere other than Little Pippin Hollow. So why does it feel like I’ve finally found the home of my heart?

And how can I get Knox Sunday to… pick me?

Excerpts:

Have you ever had someone take an instantaneous and irrational dislike to you? I had not… until I’d arrived at Sunday Orchard.

When I’d finally, finally pulled down the long driveway from the road, it had been the golden hour. The place had been gorgeous in the early evening light—menacing cattle aside—and very nearly empty, since the Orchard was closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Webb had greeted me with a handshake and introduced me to his uncle Drew, his sister Emma, his son Aiden, and his younger brother Hawk, all of whom had been welcoming and friendly and lovely. He’d shown me briefly around the office and given me a plate of dinner they’d kept warm for me. Then he’d helped me drag my big suitcase up to my new barn-apartment.

I’d been so tired from the drive that I’d nearly been sleepwalking at that point, so I hadn’t seen Knox emerge from the apartment’s tiny bathroom dressed in nothing but a low slung towel until I’d walked smack into his naked chest and bounced off it. He’d been startled, obviously, and he’d reached out his hands to steady me, while I’d tried very hard not to chub up right then and there, because ohmyflippingGod, he was the guy from the picture.

That the guy from the picture.

The happy-go-lucky one with the devilish grin that made my stomach fizz like pop rocks. And he was standing right in front of me, close enough that I could watch the lucky little water droplets cascade from his beard down his thick, muscular shoulders.

I would swear to you until my dying day that when I first glanced up at his face, his fingers had clenched around my biceps for half a second and his eyes had flared with interest—with want—like Webb hadn’t even been in the room with us. And at that moment, you could have told me that Vermont contained nothing but rabid tourists and homicidal cows, and I would have told you it was all worthwhile, because holy shit, lumbersexuals were even hotter in their natural habitat.

But then Knox had taken a step back, given me a single up-down, from the toes of my worn Birks to my Mordor Fun-Run t-shirt, and proclaimed, This child is the programmer you’re paying an arm and a leg for, Webb? The one you expect me to share an apartment with? For fuck’s sake, the kid was supposed to be here hours ago. He can’t even tell time.”

Then he’d stalked off to his bedroom, leaving me gaping after him while Webb stammered out a lame-assed explanation about Knox’s “minor health issues” forcing him to leave his “dream job” in New York, and how he was having a “tough time adjusting” and blah blah blah.

Like that was an excuse to be rude to someone? Please.

Excerpt:

I sat there and thought of how the taste and feel of his tongue still lingered on mine. I swept my gaze sideways and watched Rider. I studied the trace of stubble on his cheeks and chin, itching to trace it, to feel it on someone else, not just on my own face. I wanted to touch him, to get closer to him, to learn more. I stretched my arm over and placed it on his thigh again. Rider’s lip tugged up once more as he kept his eyes on the road. I trailed my hand ever so slightly higher.

“Are you feeling curious, Cam?” He teased.

I moved my hand back down. “Is that okay?” I asked sheepishly.

Rider grabbed my hand and returned it to where it had been. “You are allowed to touch me anyway and anywhere you want to. I’m yours to discover.” He emphasized the point by guiding my hand once more, only this time he planted it right over the bulge at the v of his thighs. I sucked in a breath at his boldness, but even after he returned his hand to the steering wheel, I didn’t pull away. I cupped him and let myself feel him beneath the jeans. Rider moaned and his head fell back against the headrest. I added more pressure as I rubbed slowly up and down, as he hardened under my touch. It was fascinating, thrilling – funny too. I knew what this would feel like if it were being done to me, somehow that made it even more exciting to know what I was doing to him.

“Fuck,” Rider whispered and tightened his grip on the steering wheel. “On second thought, this might have been a bad idea. I hate that I’m saying this because I really don’t want you to stop. Can we just press pause until we get back to your place? If you keep going, I might stop caring about driving.”

“Maybe you just need to work on your concentration skills,” I said as I reluctantly pulled my arm back. I shifted in my seat as my own arousal pressed against my jeans with Rider’s reaction.

“With you…impossible.” Rider smirked. He adjusted himself too. We were both happily uncomfortable. Did my apartment move? Shouldn’t we be there already?

“So, here’s something you may not know about dating.”

Rider arched his brow. “Oh yeah, what’s that?”

“Normally, the date comes before ending up in bed together,” I stated matter-of-factly.

“Oh, I see. That’s very interesting. Maybe we can do something about that, you know…set things right.” Rider turned to face me briefly with heat in his eyes.

“That could do,” I said as I felt that heat from him reach into me.

Excerpt from Ruling It All

Mel POV

Dylan finally broke the silence. “I’m not mad at you.”

“No? You have every right to be. I was an asshole.” I knew I had been an asshole and out of line. I still really didn’t understand why it was such a big deal. That alone probably made me sound insincere, but I just didn’t get it.

“You were, but I know you didn’t intend to eat your foot as much as you did. You couldn’t have known what kind of effect your words would have on Elias. You don’t know him.” Dylan sipped his coffee.

“I don’t. I haven’t had the opportunity to apologize to him either. He moved his appointments, clearly trying to avoid me.”

“Well, you’re not the only one he’s been avoiding. Except for his appointment earlier this week, he hadn’t left his house since that day.”

My forehead crinkled, and I set my cup down. “What? Why?”

“To put it simply, he didn’t want to cause any trouble between anyone, so he decided the best way to do that would be to remove himself from the equation.” Dylan shook his head like he didn’t agree with Elias’s actions.

“That doesn’t make any sense.” I was confused and thought the action was a little childish.

“You have to understand that Elias doesn’t think the way we do.” Dylan paused like he was trying to find words. I waited patiently. “You know how really smart people see the world differently than most everyone else?”

I nodded. I hadn’t known anyone like that but there’s examples in movies and TV. I didn’t know how accurate those were, but I could imagine how the world differed for those kinds of people.

“Well, Elias just sees the world differently. He is a genius, and I’m not just saying that. He’s literally a rocket scientist and does work for NASA, and I’m sure, the defense department. Whether he’s on the autistic or Asperger’s spectrum, I don’t know. I’ve never asked. It’s never mattered to me to put a label on him. Some people I can see would need to have an explanation, I guess, for some of his behavior, but I don’t need that. All his little quirks are the things that make him, him. The why of them doesn’t change who he is.”

I nodded. I understood exactly what he was saying. Many times I’ve been asked in my life why I am who I am, and I have no answers for them. I am who I was born as and as God made me. “Everyone has their idiosyncrasies. It’s just a matter of learning them and accepting them as part of that person.”

Moonlight Prophecies, Book 1

Alpha werewolf, crime boss, and secret Seer Bashir Bain is neck-deep in negotiating a marriage of convenience with a neighboring alpha when a tense situation goes from bad to worse. A job applicant at one of Bash’s businesses—a guy who was supposed to be a simple ex-cop, ex-con tattoo artist—suddenly turns up undead.

A rogue newborn vampire would have been a big wrench in Bash’s plans even without his attraction to the man. After all, new vampires are under their sire’s control, and Ethan Lambert doesn’t even know who turned him. When Bash spares his life, he opens himself up for mutiny, a broken engagement, and an unexpected—and risky—relationship.

Ethan just wants a fresh start after being released from prison. Before he can get it, he’ll need to turn private investigator to find out who sired him and what he wants. And he’d better do it quick, because the moon is full, and according to Bash’s prophecy, life and death hang in the balance.

BTRMoonlight Teaser 2

Excerpt:

Blood. Not visible, but he could smell it. A lot of it. Impossible to detect inside the parlor, because it always carried a faint scent of blood due to the needle work, but outside, Bash had no doubts. Those who knew about him being a Seer knew his hunches were never wrong.

A man sprinted toward him and was stopped cold when Bash shot out an arm to catch him by the throat.

No, not a man.

A vampire.

The hiss and growl and snap of fangs made it difficult to hold the creature at bay, especially since he was strong—incredibly strong. Bash could barely contain him, which should not have been a challenge as an Alpha against a newborn, but that’s what this vampire had to be, because Bash recognized him, and he hadn’t been a vampire a few hours ago. The sire had to be powerful to create a fledgling this strong on its first night turned.

“A shame we couldn’t offer you that job, Mr. Lambert,” Bash said evenly. Poor man never even made it out of the neighborhood after his interview.

Lambert—Ethan Lambert, Bash recalled—snapped again with a click of fangs. A shame indeed, but this had to be Ethan. Bash would have known anyone else lurking about these streets, shifter or human, and the young vampire had natural red hair and a handsome face beneath the raging hunger, just how Siobhan had described him.

Shifter eyes glowed with power when they gave in to their true forms, but a vampire’s changed entirely. They shone yellow when fed, amber when hungry, and red when feral. Ethan’s eyes matched the moon above. What little control he might have had if he wasn’t a newborn was buried in the back of his mind by the overwhelming need to feed.

“The hell?” Deanna bellowed from the mouth of the alley, throwing back her shoulders and letting her fangs and claws extend, her skin darkening to a deep indigo-black, fur sprouting rapidly across her skin. She was ready to tear the vampire to pieces as soon as Bash threw him her way, which was what Bash planned to do….

When he caught the glow of the scarlet moon above Ethan’s head.

Somewhere deep within the red of Ethan’s eyes was green. Bash couldn’t see it, but he knew, like a vision of the man Ethan had once been, beautiful and smiling and utterly enchanting.

With a howl, Bash slammed Ethan’s head down into the pavement once, twice, three times before he stilled.

“What did you do that for?” Deanna growled. “Rip his damn head off!”

“No,” Bash said, the claws of the hand that had seized Ethan the only part of him changed, and now that too shifted back. He bent beside Ethan, whose fangs were still visible with his lips parted, but his eyes were closed, chest still since he no longer needed to breathe. “We’re bringing him back to the den. I have questions.”

“What?” Deanna balked, all towering force even as she shifted human, save the glow of her burning violet eyes. “That’s a vampire, Bash! A parasite!”

“I’m aware, and we are taking him back with us. Now pick him up.”

“Fat chance!”

“Deanna, I am your—”

“Fuck you, big shot Alpha! When you’re being an idiot, you’re just Bash, and you can’t go bringing some fanger home when negotiations with Russell are heating up. If you ever thought a Halloween was the night, this is the one. Kill the guy and be done with it.”

That was the easy answer, but if it was easy, why bother with a prophecy? When had a vampire even entered Bash’s city? And what did it want? It couldn’t be a coincidence that Ethan had been turned and left on Bash’s doorstep.

Vampires were vermin, an infestation to be rid of if even one was discovered in pack territory. As they aged, they became far stronger than shifters, which was why they had to be eradicated before they spread, or they might take over. They were messy and foolish and too easily made feral, just like their wild newborns. Better to kill them on sight, always. Bash couldn’t even remember the last time a vampire had been spotted in Centrus City.

But if the prophecy meant for Bash to kill Ethan, why have his art so entrancing? Why have his eyes cut through Bash like bullets? Why have every part of Bash’s instincts screaming at him that killing was not the answer? There were too many connecting pieces for him to take the easy route like his father would have in his place.

“Pick him up. If I’m right, my future betrothed never needs to know.”

“Yeah,” Deanna scoffed despite bending to do as ordered, “and if you’re wrong, we’re all screwed.”

She takes the last two suitcases of our clothes—in mine, the picture of Dad—from her fender-bent hatchback. This is all we’ve got.

Mansfield has everything else we need, she said.

The car, Mum and I—our whole lives—are dwarfed by the historic mansion that looms before us.

It should be raining. There should be thunder and lightning cracking the sky the way my heart is cracking.

“I want to go home.”

“I know it’ll take time to adjust,” she coos in my ear. “But I promise, it’ll all turn out in the end. You’ll see.”

My throat is sore. “Couldn’t you have waited?” I know my whine is unreasonable, but I want her to feel my pain. Want her to feel guilty. “It’s only three more years until I leave school.”

Tom emerges from the massive entrance in a short-sleeved shirt and crisply pressed shorts. All that’s missing is a golf bag and a flash of his overly-whitened teeth.

Mum melts into a smile at the sight of him, then settles her warm eyes on me. She speaks a proverb; I know it, but I’ve never understood it before. I don’t really now, either. “Ka mate te kāinga tahi, ka ora te kāinga rua.”

When one house dies, a second lives.

But our home wasn’t dead. And leaving the refuge he made for us feels like leaving his memory behind. It feels worse.

Tears leak out the corners of my eyes. I want to sing and cry like we did at his tangi.

Mum pulls the duffel from my arms and hoists me into her embrace. She clutches me tightly, her bright dress wrinkling between us. “He is our past, he is always a part of us.”

Now we must concentrate on the present and build a future.

She lets me go and opens her arms for Tom.

I kick at the sun-gleaming grass. A black cat scampers from behind the tree and hisses as it avoids my arcing foot.

“Oi,” Tom scolds. “Careful of Mrs. Norris.”

“I didn’t . . .” It was an accident! I’d never hurt a cat.

“Why don’t you take your bag inside and look around? Help yourself to a scone, there’s some on the dining table.”

I don’t want to listen to him. I fold my arms.

He starts kissing my mum.

I grab my suitcase and stalk across the manicured lawn to the stupid, pretty house. I hope I leave mud over the pristine polished marble floor. My belongings, I drop in the middle of the entranceway. Where it’s most annoying. Only the duffel and suitcase are so small in the wide space they look ridiculous.

The dining room is as big as our old home. Sun streams in through the gridded windows and across the table set with modern plates and cups with saucers and matching navy teapots and two silver platters of scones. Some clotted cream.

I sit down on a leather-upholstered chair. I like scones. But now I don’t ever want to touch one again.

Tears track down my cheeks, hot and heavy. I swipe at them with the back of my hand, sniffing.

Footsteps.

I shoot my head up, expecting to see Mum and Tom, but it’s neither. A guy strides into the room wearing a blue cap. He’s about my age, a little older, maybe. Broad shouldered like me and toned. But I don’t know where he gets his from, living in a mansion. Okay, Mansfield is on the outskirts of Port Rātapu, and the property looked big. But it’s no farm. I can’t imagine anyone living here doing any heavy lifting.

“I guess you’re Finley?” he says.

“I guess you’re Ethan,” I say back.

Excerpt:

“Jackson Pryde,” said a voice from behind me. “Just the man I was looking for.”

My stomach fell. Of course. Drama. These days I couldn’t even make it three minutes outside my front door without running into something – or more specifically, someone annoying. I sighed, plodding as I turned around to face my nuisance neighbor.

“Xander,” I said, motioning at myself. “Please. I’ve got cuts to treat and a whole bunch of gryphon dander to wash off. I don’t have time for this.”

Xander Wright’s dark lashes fluttered as his eyes traveled down, then back up my body, his nose only slightly wrinkled in distaste. He was the kind of person who didn’t show you his disgust so openly only because he was taught not to. That was how polite society did it. That was how the Grayhaven boys did it.

“Yes,” he said. “I can see that you’ve been on another one of your excursions.”

That last word was loaded with meaning, like going out to spar with gryphons was something only someone of a certain class of people would stoop to. Xander Wright would never need to punch a gryphon or work a day in his life, not with his infinite riches. My fingers flexed, missing the caress of the Gauntlet that sat somewhere inside my backpack.

The Gauntlet went with me everywhere, honestly. Even back when it wasn’t yet properly functional, it just felt right to have it on my person at all times. It was the artificer’s burden, I suppose. A mage walked around with all his weaponry already loaded inside his soul, at the back of his tongue. In case of attack, I still needed to shove my hand up a glorified glove and punch things to custard. It wasn’t all that bad, really. Magic must be nice, but I really liked punching things, too. Things like Xander Wright’s stupid face, and his stupid pink mouth.

“Some of us have to work to eat, Xander,” I said, putting sour emphasis on his name, like it was a wedge of rotten fruit I couldn’t wait to spit out.

“I empathize with your plight greatly, Jackson,” he said, returning the favor, his eyes glimmering. I’d probably describe him as handsome if he wasn’t such a colossal pain to deal with. I already knew what he was planning to complain about, anyway. “But I do wish you would tone down the noise in your workshop. You kept me up all night last night. Again.”

A spark of anger ignited in my chest. My plight? And really? Was he really going to bitch about the workshop again? But I knew he was baiting me, and nothing made Xander happier than seeing that he’d set me off. Eye for an eye, then. I leaned against my front door, cocked my hip, then folded my arms across my chest, in a way that I knew would accentuate my assets. Suddenly, having so much exposed skin wasn’t such a bad thing after all.

When I spoke, I made sure to purr. “Are you sure it was my noise that kept you up all night, Alexander?”

Hi, I’m Nazri, a Filipino-Malaysian author based in California. I’m trilingual, but I really only write in English. I can also speak just enough Sindarin and Valyrian to impress absolutely no one. My urban fantasy novels focus on heroes who use wits, style, and their wildly unpredictable magic to save the day. Think sass and class, while kicking ass.

IG Tour Tile - ASoHH Promo 4 Set 1

Excerpt:

The roar of the twin turbofan engines burst against Trent’s ears like a koala calling for a mate. The sound was unexpected, coming from such a beautiful thing that seemed so innocent and sluggish. And while the plane was a lethargic beast on the ground, one that could hardly make a turn on its own without falling off the thick tarmac, it transformed into a serpent the moment the engines came to life.

Trent rocked back into the padded seat and clutched the armrest in a tight grip as his stomach dropped to the vicinity of his ankles. It was like the worst kind of roller coaster—one that he would ride fearlessly as a kid, only realizing later that its rusted parts were held together by bits of chewing gum.

He could hardly breathe as his ears pressurized, then popped, only to pressurize again. His mouth was dry, and his tongue was stiff with the need to hurl his light dinner all over the back of the seat that was tight against his knees. But the food couldn’t make it past his throat with his stomach so low to the floor.

He glanced at the view through the tiny oval window that looked much too flimsy to handle the same forces that were battering his ears. There were two panes, and one had an actual hole in the bottom as if it were already prepared for the doom that awaited the passengers, himself included.

It was beautiful, though. The blinking lights of the city looked so similar to the stars, and they had started to meld together into one sphere of never-ending sky. The buildings that had looked so tall while standing on the ground now looked no higher than a sheet of Bristol board. The lake was lost, as were the stream of cars along blurred highways.

The moon was barely a sliver of light, but it was so bright that he had to blink to clear the spots from his vision. The silver beams illuminated a white fluff of clouds as they fluttered over the gleaming wing.

“See? It’s not so bad,” said Ian from the seat next to him. He moved his hand, so warm and comforting, to soothe Trent’s. “That was a good take-off too. Nice and smooth.” His smile was completely at ease and his grip soft as the plane trembled around them.

“I think I’m gonna puke.” Trent gripped his stomach as the wing dipped again and they loomed sideways over the city of lights. How are we even in the air at this angle? He waited for gravity to grip them in a lasso and tear them back down to the earth.

“Smile,” said Ian urgently as he leaned forward to rifle through the seat pouch. There were a few magazines that had probably been touched by hundreds of hands, as well as the day’s newspaper, in the small elastic compartment. Ian found a slim white bag between the pages of one of the magazines.

“What?” Trent breathed deeply through his nose and forced his mouth shut as he slid his eyes closed. His mind whirled at the same speed as the plane as it continued to climb. Were they still sideways right now and slipping down to their doom? Maybe if they climbed high enough, he wouldn’t feel it when they hit the inevitable bottom.

“T, baby, take a deep breath for me and smile,” said Ian as he pressed his hand gently to Trent’s chest at the level of his heart. It was enough to ground Trent into taking another breath, even as he quivered beneath the touch.

“If you smile, you can’t gag, so you won’t puke. Here.” There was a shiver of sound as something slid beside him.

When he opened his eyes again with a forced grin on his face, the window shutter was thankfully closed. Without the dark blankness looking back at him, he could almost imagine being on a bus and not a massive plane that was soaring precariously in the sky. He could imagine that the tiny bumps were little potholes along the road, and the roar was a never-ending layer of slow strips carved into the asphalt.

Ian was right there, smiling and rubbing his chest until his warm palm rested over Trent’s stomach. Ian’s blue eyes were bright in the low light and his full lips were pulled back into a smile as he held the sick bag out to Trent. The ink carved into Ian’s skull was blocked by the black baseball cap that he had insisted on wearing to the airport. The sight of Ian, so beautiful and familiar, settled something deep within Trent.

Trent grabbed the sick bag and slipped it back into the pouch between the layers of magazines, leaving a corner out so it would still be in reach if his stomach started to turn. When he leaned back, it lined his lips up perfectly with his new husband’s, and he felt the steady tug that drew him in. Ian pulled back in surprise before their lips could meet, his gaze darting around the large compartment of passengers.

There was a child in the next row who was repeatedly kicking the seat ahead of him while playing with the touch screen that was built into the back of the headrest. It was a great idea to pass the time, but the way the child was hacking away at it was obviously driving the person in front insane. They looked back a few times, glancing at the father, who had his phone in his hand as he played what appeared to be a repetitive assassin game, while managing to stay completely oblivious to his son. There were others looking out of their windows or resting with their heads back with their eyes closed.

“Sorry.” Trent smiled, not sorry at all. “I know you don’t like PDA, but it’s our honeymoon.” Saying Ian didn’t like it was an understatement. The man was simultaneously terrified and repulsed with the idea of PDA. It blew Trent’s mind that this was the same man who had an exhibitionist streak that was larger than the aeroplane they were on.

“I love you. You know that,” said Ian as he stumbled over his quiet words. “But when I kiss you, I want to do it right. I can’t do it right with a kid staring at me.” Ian cut his focus over to the little boy, who had given up smacking the touch screen and had started pushing the armrest up and down, his feet never stopping once.

“It didn’t stop you in a public pool,” said Trent with a smirk. “Or in the back seat of your rental when we parked at the baseball diamond.” After renting a Hyundai on his first visit, Ian had learned his lesson and had stuck to large vehicles after that. It had taken a lot of convincing before Trent had found himself on his hands and knees in the back seat of a jeep.

“That was different.” Ian crossed his arms before he leaned back in his chair. His long legs bumped the seat, so he splayed them wide, with one knee spilling out into the aisle and the other taking up a third of Trent’s minimal space. “Why didn’t you let me treat you to first class again? The leg room back here is atrocious.”

Trent shifted in his seat and let Ian change the subject. His own knees were very firmly pressed into a cushioned backrest, while still being off to the side. It was a tight fit for him, and even worse for Ian, but there was no way that he could have allowed them to spend an extra two thousand dollars to get first-class tickets.

“If I really had my way, we would have driven. I may not own a car, but I can drive,” said Trent as he tried again to get comfortable.

Excerpt:

“You know I have to find out.” Julian’s heart pounded in his chest as if it would break free. There was no way anyone could keep him from finding out if his family was indeed here. He scanned the room, wearing only his jeans, at the leather couch and contemporary furnishings of their family room, at Sebastian’s beloved gold and red, Romanian icons hanging from the walls.

With an audible exhale, Sebastian shut his eyes tight and pinched the bridge of his nose, his black hair falling in waves to his shoulders over his black, button-down shirt, his bottom half still bare after their lovemaking. “Let this wait until tomorrow.” He breathed deeply and looked at Julian with black, almond-shaped eyes. “Tomorrow we will meet with my father. You can bring it to his attention.”

Julian stared at Sebastian. Would they let me see them? What would I do if they said no? He opened his mouth to speak but clamped it shut.

Sebastian stepped to Julian, then took his hand in his and kissed his cheek, sliding his long, chestnut-colored hair to the side. “We’ve had a very busy day today. Let us go to bed and deal with this in the morning.”

He nodded his head. The haze of possibility threatened to overwhelm him. “You’re right.” As he strolled with Sebastian into the hallway, he stopped at Nikolai’s door, opened it, and peeked inside. Nikolai was still here. He released a long exhale.

Nikolai lay fast asleep in a mission-style bed with a tan comforter drawn up to his chin. The crescent moon shining outside an open window above the bed gave the twelve-year-old boy a blue glow to his blond hair.

“Come on.” Sebastian tugged at Julian’s hand.

“We almost lost him.” Momentary panic pricked his heart. The memory of the fight with Caesar in the cave came rushing forward. He shut it away. Caesar was dead and they were safe now.

“And I almost lost both of you.” As Sebastian wrapped his arms around Julian’s shoulders from behind, he whispered into his ear, “It’s over now. Come to bed.”

He followed Sebastian into the doorway of their master bedroom, wrinkling his brow. His family was out there. How long would it take to fall asleep knowing that?

About the Author:

Christie Gordon started writing gay and M/M romance fiction after becoming preoccupied with anime and in particular, the boys love and yaoi genres. She’s always had stories in her head and always enjoyed writing, so she took up fiction writing classes at a local community college and published her first book with eXtasy Books back in 2009. Christie likes to write complicated characters with painful pasts that refuse to be ignored until the characters are forced to face them head on. Angst? Yes. Happily ever after? Always. It’s the struggle to get there that counts.

Christie’s day job is in the high-tech industry with a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering and a Master’s in Business Administration. She currently lives in the Phoenix, Arizona metro area and enjoyed eight years in the Bay Area of California but grew up in Minnesota. She shares a home with her partner of twelve years, a musician by night and a coder by day, who is currently in three bands, giving her plenty of time to keep writing. She is also a mother of two sons, one currently in college for engineering and the other preparing for nursing college. Her one-eyed, rescue pug is always by her side, snoring the day away.
