Book 1: A Husband for Hartwell

Book 1 A Husband for Hartwell Audiobook Cover

He must marry, or risk his fortune.

The whole of London Society has long assumed Lord William Hartwell will marry his childhood best friend, Lady Rebecca Warrington. After two Seasons, Hartwell remains quite content with bachelorhood–his parents do not. When Hartwell learns they intend to cut his purse strings unless he makes a match this Season, he resigns himself to a marriage of convenience with Becca, and yet he can’t help but be drawn to her younger brother, Warry.

He must marry, or risk his sister’s ruin.

The Viscount “Warry” Warrington is used to being viewed as the tagalong little brother. Now a grown man about to enter his second Season, Warry is desperate to be seen. When Lord Balfour, a handsome older peer, takes Warry under his wing, Warry thinks his dream is finally coming true. Until Balfour reveals his true intent—to make public a letter that will destroy Becca’s reputation, unless Warry agrees to marry him.

Time is running out for both of them.

When an injury forces Warry to recover at Hartwell House, the two succumb to a secret flirtation. But Warry’s sudden announcement of his engagement to Balfour drives Hartwell near mad with jealousy—and right into Becca’s arms. With the clock ticking for Warry to save his sister, will Hartwell discover the truth of Warry’s feelings before it’s too late?

A Husband for Hartwell is the first book in the Lords of Bucknall Club series, where the Regency meets m/m romance. The Lords of Bucknall Club books can be read as standalones but are best enjoyed in order.

Book 2: A Case for Christmas

Book 2 A Case for Christmas Audiobook Cover

He loves no-one and never will.

Lord Christmas Gale is a genius and a misanthrope, and, quite to his disgust, adored by all of Society for his capacity to solve mysteries. When a man approaches him seeking help in locating a lost dog, Gale rebuffs him. But what begins with a missing dog ends in murder and intrigue—two of Gale’s favourite things, if it weren’t for the orphan that comes attached to them. Oh, and Benjamin Chant.

He has sworn to never love again.

The Honourable Mr. Benjamin Chant isn’t sure how he got swept up in Gale’s mad investigation, but there’s something intriguing about the man—a vulnerability that most of the world doesn’t notice, but which captures Chant’s interest, and his sympathy, from their first meeting. After a disastrous love affair in the past, Chant has sworn to never give his heart away again. Especially to a man who does not want it.

But it isn’t just their hearts at stake.

When their investigation takes a dangerous turn and their lives are threatened, both Gale and Chant are forced into the realisation that perhaps two imperfect men might fit perfectly together—that is, if they can outwit the killer who is intent on seeing them both dead.

A Case for Christmas is the second book in the Lords of Bucknall Club series, where the Regency meets m/m romance. The Lords of Bucknall Club books can be read as standalones but are best enjoyed in order.

Book 3 A Rival for Rivingdon Audiobook Cover

He must marry well, to secure his fortune.

The Honourable Loftus Rivingdon is poised to make his debut into Society. He’s beautiful, charming, and quite the catch of the Season. If only he could find the right hat. With the zealous assistance of his doting mother, Loftus has one ambition only: to meet and marry a wealthy peer. And Loftus knows just the peer—the dauntingly handsome, infinitely fashionable Viscount Soulden. Good thing there’s nothing standing in his way.

He must also marry well, to secure his fortune.

The Honourable Morgan Notley is poised to make his debut into Society. He’s beautiful, charming, and quite the catch of the Season. And he has just found the perfect hat. With the zealous assistance of his doting mother, Morgan has one ambition only: to meet and marry a wealthy peer. And Morgan knows just the peer—the dauntingly handsome, infinitely fashionable Viscount Soulden. Good thing there’s nothing standing in his w—

Damn it all to hell.

Their ambitions collide.

When Loftus and Morgan both set their sights on Soulden, the rivalry of the Season begins. Their mutual hatred escalates into spite, sabotage, and scandal, as all of Society eagerly waits to see which diamond of the first water will prevail. Except the course of true loathing, just like true love, never did run smooth. The harder they try to destroy each other, the closer they come to uncovering each other’s deepest vulnerabilities—and the more difficult it becomes to deny the burning attraction between them.

Book 4: A Sanctuary for Soulden

Book 4 A Sanctuary For Soulden Audiobook Cover

He wasn’t meant for a quiet life.

Philip Winthrop, Viscount Soulden, is a fop. An idle popinjay with nothing more on his mind than how to best knot his cravat. He definitely doesn’t spy against the French. Or arrange hasty weddings. Or occasionally commandeer the navy. And he certainly doesn’t seek out mortal danger in order to combat his pervasive ennui. It’s all just a big misunderstanding when he’s shot by a French intelligence officer during a merry riverside chase. And what a wonderful bit of quick thinking to pretend to be a corpse in order to get himself taken to the local surgeon’s autopsy cellar. The French will never find him there. If the French are even looking for him. Which they’re not. Now he just needs to locate a way out before this surgeon fellow attempts to dissect him.

He’d rather deal with the dead than the living.

Surgeon Edmund Fernside does his best to heal the living, but in truth, he’d much rather look into the gaping chest cavity of a corpse than into the startling blue eyes of a…corpse that just climbed off his autopsy table. Well then. Lord Soulden is clearly a man with some complicated secrets. But with the French in hot pursuit and a rather brutal gunshot wound, Soulden’s not going anywhere anytime soon, and Fernside discovers that he enjoys the pleasure of his company. In more ways than one.

Now, trusting each other could mean the difference between life and death.

As Soulden learns to be still for the first time in his life, Fernside wonders if perhaps it’s time to spread his wings a little. They can only hide from the outside world—and from their pasts—for so long before the secrets they’ve uncovered about each other strain the growing attraction between them. Each man must decide whether a life of comfortable lies is preferable to one full of difficult truths. And whether the sanctuary they’ve created together is something worth fighting for.

A Sanctuary for Soulden is the fourth book in the Lords of Bucknall Club series, where the Regency meets m/m romance. The Lords of Bucknall Club books can be read as standalones but are best enjoyed in order.

Book 5: An Affair for Aumont

Book 5 An Affair for Aumont Audiobook Cover

All he wants is the love he lost.

Four years ago, Louis-Charles Aumont, the Marquis de Montespan, chose duty over the man he loved. And then the man he loved chose death in service to England. Now, after finally cutting ties with his king, Aumont is living in a slum in Seven Dials–and intending to die there too. But when Bow Street Runner George Darling shows up at his door with a strange proposition, Aumont is intrigued by the prospect of something–anything–that might make him feel alive again. Or at least provide the funds he needs to drink himself to death.

All he wants is the love he couldn’t have.

George Darling joined the Bow Street officers out of a belief in order. He accepts no bribes, indulges in no vices, and tries very hard not to dream above his station. If only Lord Christmas Gale hadn’t put that last one to such a test. Now that turning his thoughts from Lord Christmas only lands them instead on the handsome Frenchman with whom he recently crossed paths, Darling is more determined than ever to keep his head down and focus on his duty–until a knock on his door sends his life into disarray. Teddy Honeyfield, a former companion of Lord Christmas’s, is in need of a temporary bodyguard. Darling would never pass as the sort of gentleman Teddy requires…but he knows someone who might.

Neither wants to take a chance on a love that can never be.

When Aumont and Darling join forces to help Teddy, they’re not expecting to risk their hearts as well as their lives. Darling’s striking looks remind Aumont quite painfully of the man he’s lost, and Aumont’s title reminds Darling he has no right to desire a nobleman. But the rising threat soon drives them to flee with Teddy to the country–a journey that puts them face-to-face with their pasts while showing them a chance for happiness is within reach, if only they’re courageous enough to grab it.

An Affair for Aumont is the fifth book in The Lords of Bucknall Club series, where the Regency meets m/m romance. The Lords of Bucknall Club books can be read as standalones but are best enjoyed in order.

Book 6: A Scandal for Stratford

Book 6 A Scandal For Stratford Audiobook Cover

He has all he could ask for.

James Lewis, the Earl of Stratford, has precisely what he wants: a quiet existence on his family estate, a thriving horse trade that leaves him plenty of time to work on the final volume of his anonymously published opus, The Maiden Diaries, and a deeply committed albeit unconventional relationship with his stablemaster, Harold Granger. While the shy, awkward earl can barely manage a word in London society, with Harold, he can share anything.

He wouldn’t change a thing.

Harold Granger knows what he and James risk by loving one another. James’s reputation as an eccentric recluse would be twisted into something far worse if anyone learned he was carrying on an affair with a servant. Worse still if anyone learned that Harold puts the earl on his knees and delivers the welts and bruises James begs for. But when it’s just the two of them, everything feels so perfectly right, and Harold is determined to remain a safe harbour to James no matter what.

But a storm is fast approaching.

Their determination to protect each other is put to the test when James’s volatile younger brother, Frederick, returns from a decade abroad, nursing grudges from the past. When Frederick stumbles upon James’s secrets, he sees a means to rid himself of his brother and reclaim his own place in society. His scheming forces James and Harold from their idyllic life and into a web of treachery that can only be untangled by the Bucknall Club circle–if the two can let themselves trust these newfound friendships the way they trust each other.

A Scandal for Stratford is the sixth book in The Lords of Bucknall Club series, where the Regency meets m/m romance. The Lords of Bucknall Club books can be read as standalones but are best enjoyed in order.

The worst day of my life was my first day of high school – the day I met him. Spencer Marsh. The guy who would shove me into lockers for the next four years.

I never expected to reunite with him in college. I definitely didn’t predict that sparks would fly. This new and improved Spencer is subverting all my expectations, but I’m not sure if that’s a good thing.

Hooking up with a guy I used to hate is turning into more than just a shameful secret. I should put a stop to it. I should want to put a stop to it. So why don’t I?

Spencer

I’ve been trying since graduation to be different from the guy I was in high school, but seeing Rhett again stirs up old emotions – and an overwhelming desire to atone.

Nevermind that that atonement seems to be happening in some … compromising positions.

My frat brothers and father would never accept what I’m doing, but that doesn’t seem to be enough to stop me. I’m finally the man I want to be, the person I’ve been repressing for most of my life. And it’s all thanks to the guy who used to be the target of my worst impulses.

I only hope Rhett will give me a chance to prove I’m not who I used to be.

Excerpt:

My back ends up against the door. I have one foot on the floor so I can open my legs as much as possible, giving him a show as I reach into my pants for myself. His eyes follow my hand, tracing every motion as I stroke myself. I leave my pants on, partially covering myself, teasing him by offering only small glimpses.

He crawls forward without me ordering it, fitting as best he can between my legs. He’s bulky, but I’m flexible. We’ll make it work, especially since we’re both so inexplicably determined.

“Can I?” he says, wetting his lips.

Yeah, never, ever seen a straight boy who looks at a cock like that. Spencer has some heavy soul-searching to do, but that is not my problem. If he wants to suck me off so badly, who am I to stand in his way?

I finally get myself all the way out of my pants, though the garment is still mostly on.

“All yours,” I say, like my cock is the last bite of cake at a party.

Spencer certainly goes for it like it is. Before I even get my hand out of the way, his head is dipping down, his lips around my head. For someone who has never done this before, it doesn’t take much before he’s sinking down me, plunging all the way to where my hand stops him at the base. He makes a frustrated little noise I can feel in my dick, then slides back up, coming all the way off.

“Let me,” he says. “Please?”

It’s weird hearing him so meek, but I remove my hand. The moment I’m out of his way, Spencer dives back into his work, throwing himself down me without an ounce of grace or finesse. There’s no tongue, no complimentary hand motion, no teasing at my balls, just the blunt drive of his hot mouth around me as he takes me in so deep his nose ends up against my skin.

For all that, it’s good. Goddamn good.

“Fuck,” I breathe as I tilt my head back against the cool window behind me. I close my eyes, and it’s almost like someone I don’t despise is on my cock instead of Spencer goddamn Marsh.

Excerpt:

Ian loved his boys’ nights out and tonight’s was the perfect antidote to the unpleasant meeting he’d had earlier in the day. At the party Ian observed his usual rituals, saw the usual people and as always, avoided drinking so he was totally in control. When he looked at his watch, he was surprised at the time. It was late and he had to get home. He changed into his street clothes, bade the rest of the party-goers adieu and trundled his suitcase back to the car. He pressed the button on his key fob to open the trunk and was about to stow away his bag when a voice from the shadows said, “You come here often?”

Ian jumped.

“Jesus, what the fuck are you doing here?” Ian snapped.

“Just being curious, I guess. Just wondered what you got up to in your spare time.”

“I don’t appreciate being stalked. What do you want?”

“You know what I want!”

“We’ve talked about this before.”

The figure pulled a knife out of his coat pocket.

Ian saw the uncertainty in his assailant’s eyes. “I can’t do anything about this right now, but tomorrow, I’ll call you and give you what you want.”

The attacker lowered his knife slightly. Ian talked, soft and slow, saying what he knew his attacker wanted to hear. He finished with, “I promise.”

“You’d better be telling the truth,” the assailant said as he spit his gum out on the drive and disappeared back into the shadows.

Ian started shaking. I’ve got to get home. Katherine will be worried. His trunk was open and his suitcase was still sitting on the ground. He put his bag in the trunk and drove down the driveway, through the gates as they opened and out onto the main access road.

A figure stepped out of the shadows and flagged him down.

What does he want now? he thought. He lowered his window and said, “I’ll deal with this tomorrow.”

Then Ian realised that something wasn’t quite right.

A voice said, “I don’t believe you. Give me the keys.”

“What?”

“The car keys. Give me your car keys!” the attacker snapped, reaching in the window and grabbing onto Ian’s hair. It was then that Ian saw the gun.

His heart pounded as he pulled the keys out of the ignition and handed them over with a shaky hand.

“Out of the car. Now!”

As soon as he stepped out, Ian was grabbed and dragged towards the back of the car. The trunk lid popped open. The man tore off the emergency trunk lid release tab before saying, “Get in.”

“Where are you taking me?”

“Get in and you’ll find out.”

Ian climbed into the trunk and curled himself into a protective ball as the lid slammed shut. He was in total darkness. His suitcase, which contained all of the objects of the beautiful aspect of his life, pressed painfully into his back. The engine roared and the car reversed, then sped ahead. Every turn, corner, pothole and stop sent him ricocheting around his tight prison cell. As the car bounced on a particularly deep rut, his head hit the hinge of the trunk and blood trickled down his face.

The car came to an abrupt stop and the driver’s side door opened, then closed. The trunk lid popped open.

He wasn’t sure where he was. It was remote, and in the distance he could hear water running.

“Get out.”

Ian’s limbs felt heavy and he was having trouble disentangling himself from the suitcase and other items in the trunk.

The man said, “Now, I hope you know I’m serious about this. Are you going to give me what I want?”

Something inside Ian snapped. For once, he wanted things to go his way. He stared directly at his attacker and said, “No, you will not get what you want. And you will pay for this. I’ll go to the papers and tell them everything.”

Then Ian started to run. He got twenty feet before his left foot caught on a tree root and he fell. He looked back and could see that his assailant was nearly on top of him.

Ian curled his legs beneath him, and with every last ounce of strength, launched himself directly at his attacker, driving his head into the assailant’s stomach and knocking the wind out of him. Ian turned around and started to run past his car and along a trail which seemed to head towards a street lamp.

He got no more than fifty feet down the path when the man tackled him from behind. He landed with a crack. Ian looked up into the sky. So many stars, he thought. So many…

When Ian came to, he felt as if he were floating. His head throbbed and he couldn’t see out of his left eye. His brain swam in a sea of confusion. He was naked. None of this made sense. Ian tried to stand up but his legs wouldn’t oblige. He was surrounded by water. His brain shouted messages of danger and get to safety, but his body failed to cooperate. The cold water felt good. It eased the pain. The trees and stars above swirled as he thought, I used to like swimming. Then he descended into blackness.

Hockey is in my blood. I learned to skate before I learned how to ride a bike. I’ve been on a wild ride, playing at the highest level for some of the biggest and best teams in the league. But now it’s over, and I’m not sure what to do with myself.

So I’m going home to Elmwood.

But I’ll tell you what I’m not gonna do—I’m not going to coach my buddy’s junior hockey league. No chance. I don’t know how to deal with kids, and besides, the other coach—who happens to be my best friend’s brother—hates me. With reason.

That may be old news, yet something tells me we’re going to have to deal with the past.

And that’s almost as scary as coaching teens.

Nolan

No, I don’t hate Vinnie, but he drives me nuts.

He’s cocky, goofy, selfish, and yeah…after all these years, I’m still attracted to him. But I’m a responsible adult now. I run my family’s business, and with the help of my ex, I’ve made Elmwood Diner into a New England institution.

So maybe my life isn’t particularly exciting at the moment, and maybe Vinnie isn’t the worst. Nonetheless, I have no desire to rekindle a friendship with the hockey hero who no doubt will be on the first flight out of town the second he gets bored or gets a better offer.

And I’m not coaching with him. No way.

Ugh…

I can’t believe I’m doing this again.

Excerpt:

Vinnie set a twenty on the table and stood. “Thanks for the coffee.”

“It’s on the house,” I insisted, pushing the money toward him.

“No, no. I support local businesses. Keep the change.”

His over-the-top wink practically begged me to roll my eyes, but I had more to say. We had to clear the air…at least a little.

“Um…hey, even if you don’t make it through summer, your presence alone is good for business for the whole town. ‘NHL Hero Comes Home’ and all that bullshit. If you don’t mind the attention, and I’m assuming you don’t—come help out at the rink. It’s easy and fun. You won’t regret it.”

Vinnie rubbed his scruffy jaw thoughtfully. “Okay. I’ll do it.”

I smiled tentatively and raised my hand for a high five. “Great.”

“But only if you’re my assistant.”

“What?” I pulled my hand away before he could slap it, furrowing my brow. “No way. Gavin is perfectly capable of—”

“Nope. It has to be you.”

I frowned. “Why?”

“ ’Cause…” Vinnie blew out an exasperated breath. “I want to fix this. Me and you. And I can’t do that if you ignore me.”

And just like that, the invisible wall between us shook in its foundation.

“We’re fine,” I bluffed.

Vinnie arched a brow. “You’re mad at me. I know why, and I get it. We don’t have to go into it now, but at the very least, we should call a truce ’cause if we’re working with impressionable teens, you really oughtta be nice to me, Moore.”

My mouth opened in a perfect O. “I’ve been perfectly civil to you. More civil than you deserve, Kiminski.”

“See? That wasn’t nice,” he teasingly scolded. “I can’t believe I’m the voice of reason here.”

I fixed him with a bored sardonic stare. “You are never the voice of reason.”

“I kind of am now.”

“No, you aren’t.”

“Yes, I am.”

“No, you—oh, my God.” I pointed at the door. “Good-bye, Vinnie.”

He snickered, flashing a lopsided devil-may-care grin my way. “Wait up. Let’s seal the deal on this truce.”

“Oh, brother.”

“I’m serious. Let’s shake hands, hug it out, kiss and make up, or all of the above.”

I regarded his outstretched hand suspiciously and cautiously slid my palm against his. “Fine. Truce.”

“See, that didn’t sound friendly. You ruined it. Gimme a hug,” he demanded, pulling me into a bear hug, squeezing me hard enough to crack a rib.

I let out an oomph of surprise and tried to wriggle out of his hold. He took the hint and loosened his grip. I knew it was all in good fun or at least meant to playfully rile me up, but when he bent to kiss my cheek, I turned my head just as he swooped in and bam! Our lips collided in an actual, honest-to-God kiss.

A fucking kiss.

I couldn’t speak for Vinnie, but I was too shocked to move.

We’d been here before.

Sure, it had been almost twenty years ago, but I was positive neither of us was looking for a repeat. I certainly wasn’t. Any second now, he’d back up, swipe his hand across his mouth and make some ridiculous joke to right the balance. But he didn’t.

He softened his lips and molded them to mine, tilting his chin as if testing a new angle. And suddenly, this felt real.

Oh, no.

Oh…no.

I pushed out of his arms, sucking in a gulp of air.

Holy shit.

My heart beat like a drum, and my mouth was bone dry.

“I think—I think we’re good now,” I rasped.

Vinnie’s shell-shocked expression gave way to something unreadable. He scratched his nape and stepped aside.

“Yeah. Uh…what time is practice?”

“Thursday at three.”

He nodded and tried a smile that never reached his eyes. “Cool. See ya, Nol.”

I froze in place as the door swung shut behind him, willing my heartbeat to calm the fuck down.

Did that happen?

It wasn’t real. I knew that, but he didn’t pull away. He lingered, he pressed closer, he…he kissed me.

Reality check: Vinnie was a notorious prankster. He was always doing something to push boundaries—make you laugh, make you mad, make you stop taking life so damned seriously. Silly was his fallback language. If lighthearted pranks and teasing kept some uncomfortable parts of the past at bay, I was all for it.

But I was still confused. Very confused.

Pip Simmonds is the twinkiest twink in London. He’s loud, proud, and packed to the brim with sass. But when he’s laid low by illness, even his hotpants lose their sparkle and his worried boss sends him to the South of France to recuperate in his holiday home.

Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat is beautiful, and the periwinkle-blue villa is luxurious, but the real draw for Pip is the villa’s other resident—his boss’s younger brother, Olivier Durand.

Olivier owns a perfume empire and has spent his whole life running from any other form of commitment. He’s worldly, carefree, wild, and the perfect choice for a holiday fling.

Drawn together by proximity, the two men become lovers and friends and then something more. Something special. But will their special bond hold true after summer’s end, when they both must return to their real lives?

This is the second book in the bestselling Model Agency series, but it can be read as a standalone.

A brilliant idea occurs to me. “And you’d better go now because the owner is here. He’s inside.”

I still can’t see his face, but somehow, I know he’s amused. My impression is confirmed when he says, “Really?” with a great deal of lively scepticism.

“Oh yes.” I shift from one foot to the other rather awkwardly. I’m used to being naked in front of men, but more pleasurable things are usually on the agenda. “He’s my lover, and he’s gone to make drinks. Then he’ll be out here, and there’ll be hell to play.”

“Oh, dear. That does sound worrying. Is he dangerous?”

His beautiful French accent lingers on the last word, and I’m lost for a second. Then I rally.

“Oh, very,” I say airily. “He’ll kill anyone who looks twice at me.”

“He must be a very busy man.”

The compliment disarms me. “Oh well, of course,” I say, regaining my composure. “Thank you. You’re quite right, stranger who is not an axe man.”

“I am definitely not that. I don’t think I could fit an axe in my shorts’ pockets, no?”

“You’d be surprised. I’ve met a few men who’ve got enough room down there to stock the contents of B and Q,” I say unthinkingly.

He throws his head back, laughing. It’s a very attractive sound.

“You should go,” I say wistfully. This is the most exciting thing that’s happened to me since my ex shagged me in a glass lift.

“Ah, because your lover will emerge soon, yes?”

I nod.

“And your lover is?” he asks.

“Oh.” My thoughts immediately spin towards the enigmatic brother of my boss. “He’s Olivier Durand.”

“Really?”

I raise my eyebrow. “He’s insanely possessive of me.” I wave a hand down my body. “And who can blame him?”

“Indeed.”

I narrow my eyes. “I can’t help feeling you don’t believe me, stranger danger.”

He steps forward, and a torch sheds light on his face. I stiffen. It’s a face I last saw in a photo in the kitchen—the picture that showed him smiling with my boss’s arm over his shoulders.

“Shit,” I say morosely.

Olivier Durand chuckles, his eyes dancing. “I do believe you. You are incredibly convincing, but now I am in a quandary.”

“Sounds painful.”

So painful, because I’m afraid I will now have to visit a doctor.”

“Why?” I ask faintly.

“For my memory loss, of course. Here was I thinking myself a hale, fairly hearty, and very single young man, when pouf, I am the victim of amnesia and cannot remember the name of my beautiful young lover. And after that, I shall have to get my shotgun ready to begin shooting your many suitors in a fit of insane rage.”

“Oh dear.”

He starts to laugh again. “It is Pip, yes?”

I put my hands on my hips. “Who else?”

The Sunny Side

Jonas Durand is successful, rich, and controlled. He owns a prestigious modelling agency and has the world at his fingertips, but a turbulent childhood has taught him to be focused and never deviate from a plan.

Dean Jacobs threatens that stance. He’s one of the world’s most sought-after supermodels, but he’s also laidback and lighthearted and free in a way that Jonas has never quite managed.

Dean has always been interested in Jonas and has never made any secret of his admiration, but from the beginning, Jonas put him in a neat little box labelled, “Don’t touch,” turned the key, and never looked back.

However, the universe seems determined to thwart Jonas’s plans. Over the course of one hot summer, the two men come together, and Jonas’s well-ordered life becomes something a whole lot wilder.

Moving from the glamorous worlds of London and Paris Fashion Weeks to the sleepy South of France, Jonas finds himself liberating partridges, chasing his supermodel, and falling in love.

From bestselling author, Lily Morton, comes a romantic comedy set in the fast-paced and snarky world of modelling. This is the first book in the Model Agency series.

Excerpt:

Chapter One

It had been more than fifteen years now, so he guessed he could call himself a professional. A professional pickpocket.

He still had it. That thought. It slithered in as his hands sneaked out the object of interest from people’s pockets or bags or whatever. That thought. What would happen if he got caught?

He’d been caught. Of course he had been caught—everybody would get caught doing something if they did it long enough. And after that, if they continued, they might just get to be good enough at it that they wouldn’t get caught again. But if the punishment was terrifying enough, they’d either stop doing it all together, or they’d always have that thought. At least when doing a challenging job.

So, there he was—on a train, bumbling its way across the border. He was headed for Paris, France. He’d just finished a job there and had been on his way to Germany when he’d told to go back to Paris with the artifact still in his possession.

That thought nagged again.

The request was off. Somewhere, deep in the pit of his stomach, restlessness stirred.

So, maybe he should just stop thinking about it? Stop thinking about why the transfer was to be done in Paris and not in Germany as first agreed upon.

That thought. What would happen if he got caught with an incunabula worth seventeen thousand euros he’d just stolen not a hundred miles from his current location less than twenty-four hours earlier? Probably a lot more than when he’d been caught by the guy who’d sent him on the job in the first place. The guy who was the reason for that thought. The guy who knew how to punish an eleven-year-old pickpocket caught on the grounds of a traveling family fair.

Well, he and his dad hadn’t been traveling with the fair—they’d just followed a few of them all over the states and scammed and picked pockets and tried to keep away from anything resembling authority.

He didn’t think he had ever been so scared in his short life, and at that point, he had been pretty sure his life wasn’t going to be much longer than another twenty minutes.

He hadn’t thought about it in years, and yet his mind took him back.

Sixteen years earlier

It was big, it was white, and it was empty in a way I had never known. The room had one door, one chair, and one table, but it was spacious enough to hold at least ten more of each. I had been carried through the door blindfolded, planted on a chair, and handcuffed to the table. A hoodie-clad guy had pulled off the blindfold and left me there alone in that big, white, and empty room. My heaving breath echoed back to me.

At the age of eleven, fear is that creeping feeling triggered by that faceless thing that goes bump in the night. Or the monster under your bed that the other kids told you is called the Boogeyman. It’s that thing that makes you wait until you almost pee in your bed before you hurry to the bathroom in the dead of night. At this age, I didn’t even have a word for the feeling that this big, empty room breathing back at me caused. I do now. Terror-stricken.

Whether it was the vastness of the room’s size or all the white that sucked up time, I cannot say, but to this day I still have no idea how long I sat there alone. I do, however, remember the deafening thud of the door as it was pushed open with enough force for the handle to make a permanent indentation in the wall.

Three men entered—one of them being the guy who’d left me there. He still didn’t say anything, and he still didn’t look like he intended to anytime soon.

I studied and weighed them. It was something I’d taught myself over the years as my dad and I had sought out the next sucker to pay for our next meal or Dad’s next drink. I would categorize the targets on a scale from one to ten, which ranged them from gullible to cop. No need to mention that once we got close to cop, I’d start to look around for another sucker. But here was a whole new kind of number ten. Dad had told me about what we had to stay alerted for—cops and bouncers were our usual ten. He’d mentioned another ten once. He’d mumbled it as I pulled him from a pile of trash, and he smelled of vomit and blood.

“If you ever have to run in your life, son, then run faster from the ones you owe money than anyone else.”

When reaching adulthood and having to stand on your own two feet, it’s nice to have a collection of wise words from your old man and…this is what I got. Oh yeah, and my favorite.

“Never trust anyone who can profit from stabbing you in the back.” Good advice, actually. I learned the gravity of this one at a young age, and it began with this whole new kind of ten standing in front of me.

He was about as big as the door, crewcut closely enough to almost look bald, and he wore a suit. Gray and shiny and clean. The other two wore jeans and hoodies. They were neither shiny nor clean, so they were there to do Shiny’s dirty work, I guessed.

“Listen up, you little shit,” Shiny said as he leaned forward and looked me in the eye. I feared him from that moment on. “You better still have that coin you lifted from my pocket or may whatever God who has just a second to show mercy give you all of his fucking attention. Where is it?”

“I don’t have it.” It hadn’t occurred to me that I should probably have chosen my words more carefully, but I caught on quickly. I had only met a few fuck-ups until that point who were nasty enough to grab me hard by the arm. This guy didn’t stop at that. He swung his hand, and the room sailed and my ear sang. His hand must have covered half my face because that was how much felt like it was on fire. He hit a lot harder than my dad.

“Let’s try that again,” he said calmly, while I fought my stinging eyes.

“I can get it back,” I said.

“Very good, Kiddo, now we’re getting somewhere.” He stared at me for a long time. He leaned over me and whispered into my ear. “I really hate kids. You never learn. Or you think you’ll get away with anything. But I’ll make sure you remember me.”

He stood up with a sadistic smile. I had no doubt that he was telling the truth because at that moment I was sitting on the evidence that he was one nasty piece of work. Shiny smiled, pulled out his jacket and reached in. His face froze, and he began searching his pockets methodically. Finally he stopped and stared at me wide-eyed. “You dirty little thief! You picked my pockets while handcuffed to a table?”

I raised my hands. I was going for the all-innocent expression, but let’s face it—growing up in my family, I didn’t have a whole lot of innocence left, and certainly not enough to fool those old cons.

The guy’s brown eyes twinkled in amusement, and he nodded at one of the others. The other guy lifted me from the chair. I winced as the steel kept my hands by the table even though my body was hanging midair. And there, on the seat of the chair, were the pliers I’d just lifted from his inside pocket while he’d been whispering in my ear.

“Sit him down, no one do anything. I think we might have a winner here.”

Shiny left the room and returned with an elderly guy in a suit as nice and clean as his own, but the jacket strained around the midsection of the aging man. I’d seen him a few days earlier in town as I ran an errand for my dad. He’d gotten out of a limo along with two young men and three young women. They’d called him Mr. Henry.

Mr. Henry came over, smiling, as if he was excited to be shown something. “Can you do that again?” The old man studied me a beat, then chuckled and leaned over me. “Do that again, and I’ll let you go,” he whispered. For a second, I thought I’d better keep my hands to myself, but that was like telling a cat not to drink the cream placed in front of it. I simply couldn’t help myself even though my mind had begun to feed me images of what Shiny had planned for the pliers and my grubby little fingers.

Mr. Henry stood up and went through his pockets. He smiled, held out his bare hands, and turned around for all to see. No one seemed to get it, though, so everyone looked at me, including the smiling Mr. Henry.

I held up a key—a big, old one with a piece of red string attached. The other hand I tried to keep out of sight, as his watch was too big to be covered completely by my hand.

“Very good, my boy:” Mr. Henry reached out. By doing so, his sleeve slid back. He froze and stared at his arm. I held up the watch. A big smile broke the stunned expression. “Excellent!”

He took the key and his watch, checked his pockets again, apparently finding that he still had everything else, and left with Shiny.

Shiny came back a few minutes later. His expression had changed. “If you ever steal from me again, I don’t care what Mr. Henry says, I’ll cut off all your little fingers and have you watch as I feed them to my snake, Thelma. Do you hear me?” I nodded vigorously. “We’re going to go and retrieve my coin now. If you try to escape or in any way double-cross me, I will spend every waking moment hunting you down. And when I find you, I’ll feed all of you to Thelma…while you are alive. Understood?”

I nodded even more vigorously, trying not to picture just how big that snake could be. And I failed miserably.

Love in No Man’s Land Series, Book 3

When Marcus suggests we make a bet and if I win I get his ex’s ticket on a four day cruise, I’m not sure he’s for real. He doesn’t like to gamble and he hates to lose even more than I do. Yet, the allure of sharing a room with him for four glorious days is too tempting to resist.

To my surprise, I win, and Marcus doesn’t resist the outcome. It’s almost like he actually wanted to lose. But that would be crazy, right?

Things take an even wilder turn when Marcus’s mom mistakes me for his fiancé, and neither of us corrects her. Now, his whole family believes we’re engaged, and we’re caught in a tangled mess of lies, with even his brother and our friends joining the charade.

Amidst the chaos, I have to admit that this plan might just be the best idea I’ve ever had. Well, except for our little rehearsal of a staged kiss, just in case we need to perform it in front of his family. That was the best idea ever, because with his hands on my waist and his mouth on mine I’m starting to think this fake relationship might be more real than either of us thought.

But when a past hookup threatens to expose everything, it forces Marcus to choose between revealing the truth or pretending I’m just like his former flame.

Can our fake relationship survive reality, or will it crumble under the weight of secrets and revelations?

ARI:

The tall, glass building of my family’s law firm never looked more ominous than it does right now. I’m standing at the doors, far enough away that I don’t obstruct the other people making their way in, but close enough that every time the doors open I get a glimpse of the security check and reception desk. People scramble past to get inside, none of them paying me much attention. Why would they? It’s not like my name is on the building–oh, wait, it is, but I haven’t been here in years. If I had my way, I’d never be back here again. But I made a deal and I never back out on a deal.

Five years ago I stood in his office, way up there on the sixty-first floor, and promised that when I returned I’d be everything he wanted me to be. I’d be done embarrassing him, be ready to take my place beside him at Finch and Finch and continue to build up the respectable name. The firm he and my grandfather started. I’m nowhere near ready. These last five years only proved one thing; I’ll never be the man he wants me to be.

I pull at my tie; it’s like a noose around my neck, squeezing tighter and tighter the longer I stall.

I should just go inside. I have to face what’s coming, but I can’t convince my feet to move. I free the tie and ball it up in my pocket. I use my other hand to unbutton the neck of my shirt and as I squeeze it tighter, air rushes into my lungs, bringing a modicum of relief.

How do I do this?

My phone vibrates in my pocket and I pull it out, hands shaking.

MARCUS: I just found out that there is a ’60s theme night on this thing. Costumes will be required. Are you sure you still want to go?

Marcus out of a suit and in hippy bell bottoms and a silk shirt? Hell yes I’m sure I want to go.

ARI: Leave the costumes to me. We’ll be the best dressed on the cruise. They have prizes for that, right?

MARCUS: No idea about the prizes, but you’ll be in for a challenge if you want to win, some of the family are in the theatre, so they’ll bring it.

ARI: Oh, I love a challenge.

MARCUS: I’m well aware of that.

My hands are no longer shaking as I lock my phone and slip it back into my pocket. This cruise is going to be amazing. Four days of face to face time with Marcus, could a guy wish for anything more? I look up at the building again and it somehow doesn’t seem so sinister. Maybe I can do this.

Carnival of Mysteries Shared Universe

Summer of Hush, Book 3

From the author of Foreword Indies Finalist Summer of Hush and BookLife Prize Quarterfinalist Brains and Brawn comes a new installment in the series, a contemporary gay romance with a side of time travel and magic.

Musical prodigy Kallos Alexandrou has played his calliope for countless visitors at Errante Ame’s Carnival of Mysteries, but his one-year residency has come to an end. Scars from a terrible tragedy in his past are the only explanation he has for his loss of speech and memory, but it’s time to move on, so when a music festival sets up next to the carnival, Mr. Ame sends him off with identification, a bottomless billfold, and a set of new clothes. Outside the carnival’s perimeter, Kal finds himself in an unfamiliar world surrounded by strange instruments and vibrant people like nothing he’s ever seen.

Ryan Wells is the troubled and celebrated lead singer of the metal band Backdrop Silhouette. He’s brought more than his share of baggage on the last cross-country Warped Tour, including harsh restrictions placed on him by his parole officer and the band’s label, but it’s the treatment from his bandmates that have him feeling unsettled. After a tough morning, he spots a strange young man playing carnival music on a keyboard backstage, and the sound takes him back to a particularly vulnerable time in his youth. Intrigued, Ryan asks the young man’s name, but he flees only to appear later as a replacement stagehand for the tour.

An invitation from the band Hush to ride on their bus gives Ryan and Kal a welcome distraction. They find the camaraderie and support they’ve both been craving…as well as a little magic and a fresh new romance. But the music business makes personal relationships difficult to maintain, and when the tour ends, Ryan and Kal will have to make a choice: move forward together on an uncertain path, or let fear keep them from trusting that sometimes you really can have everything you desire.

You Can Do Magic is part of the multi-author Carnival of Mysteries Series. Each book stands alone, but each one includes at least one visit to Errante Ame’s Carnival of Mysteries, a magical, multiverse traveling show full of unusual acts, games, and rides. The Carnival changes to suit the world it’s on, so each visit is unique and special. This book contains a Depression-era calliaphone, a Ouija board with a purpose, and tour bus hijinks that will warm your heart and make you gigglesnort. Reading Summer of Hush and Brains and Brawn before this book will give you the full Warped Tour experience, but You Can Do Magic can be read as a standalone as well as the other books in the shared universe. Recommended 18+.
