I put the phone on speaker so I could hear him while I texted him.
Let me in.
“Let you in where?”
Your house. Your bedroom.
“What do you mean?” His breath hitched, and the heavy blinds moved. He pulled open the doors that led to the balcony and walked out. My heart raced in my chest, the sight of him a balm to my heart. “Oh my god, you’re here aren’t you?”
I told you I’d watch over you.
“But I’m not sure that’s what you’re doing. For all I know you’re waiting for the right moment to take advantage of me again.”
I never took advantage of you.
Or maybe I had. I sent another message.
Maybe holding you through the night was a bit of taking advantage, but that’s all I ever did.
“I’m not sure I believe you.”
You believe me.
It’s why you got rid of the burner phone but saved my number.
It’s why you texted me instead of any of your friends.
And it’s why you won’t call the police even though you know I’m watching you.
He breathed hard and heavy inside the speaker.
“I should call the police,” he said. “This is weird, you knowing who I am while I don’t know you.”
I think you find it exciting.
“I do not.” His protest was fast and loud like a yelp. “Who are you?”
I typed the word, and he scoffed. “I’m not calling you that.”
He would. Maybe not now but later he definitely would.
