He smiles cheerfully at me. “Are you ready?”

I blink. “I beg your pardon?”

“Are you ready for our walk?”

I rack my brain, trying to remember making plans. Then I realise that I didn’t. “Why would I be ready for a walk, Laurie?”

His expression is sympathetic but still somehow manages to look like he’s taking the piss. It seems to be a character trait of his. “For fresh air,” he says, slowly enunciating every word.

I roll my eyes. “I’ll open a window if I require that,” I inform him. Normally, I’d shut the door in his face. I have no problem with being rude. Today, for some unknown reason, I just stand here looking at him.

His mouth quirks and he claps his hands together. “Come on then, Mags. The day’s a wasting.”

“I’m not sure that my day was wasting in any form.”

“Were you working?”

I nod.

“It’s a Saturday. Your day was definitely being wasted. Come on,” he says. “Grab a jacket and your pension book and let’s go for a walk. It’s a lovely day”

“I do not possess a pension book,” I state. “Because I am only a few years older than you.”

“It’s not the age. It’s the mileage,” he says happily. “And those twinks of yours look like they could take a lot out of a person’s tank.”

I want to be angry, and indeed I open my mouth to blast him, but what comes out, to my amazement, is a huge laugh. He watches me, smiling, and when

I’ve finished chuckling, I wink at him. “I have a tank with a great capacity,” I inform him.

“Those who don’t, brag. Get your stuff and hurry up.”

I slept in short bursts and felt terrible as I attempted to force my tired eyes to focus as a dull throb pulsed across the back of my head.

The buzz went off again, and I recognized the pattern as Mitch’s. A glance at my watch showed he was texting and that it was six thirty. He’d be on his way to pick me up—if he wasn’t already there.

Crap.

I should’ve told him last night not to pick me up.

I propped myself against the headboard and grabbed my phone from the nightstand.

Are you all right? I just drove by your house and there’s three black SUVs there and a scary-looking dude outside the front door. I’m around the corner if you want me to pick you up. Let me know.

Who was at the house? It sounded like more than the regular police. Was TOS looking for me? Had Mom sent them? Or was it whoever had been in the house yesterday?

I pulled my legs to my chest and held them to me while I dropped my head onto my knees. I didn’t know what to do.

Another buzz from Mitch.

You’re freaking me out. Text me back.

Shit.

What could I tell him, so he wouldn’t worry?

Staring at the screen didn’t help.

Unlocking the phone with my thumb, I stared at the messages. He’d know I’d seen them.

I typed: Sorry. Should’ve texted. John’s meeting some people for Mom and Dad. I left early. Catch you at school.

I sent it and almost immediately the three dots appeared as he typed. In a few seconds the response arrived.

No worries. Just glad you’re okay. Tell your parents they need less scary colleagues. Didn’t expect to be freaked out first thing.

Mitch knew the basic cover for my parents with the FBI and Homeland Security jobs and that John worked with them.

Of course, this would only satisfy Mitch until he got to school and discovered I wasn’t there. Eventually news about John would get out, unless somebody was already keeping that quiet. That had to be why so many people were at the house.

Maybe TOS had mobilized without the network. A quick look in the corner of the phone screen showed that the network icon wasn’t present. Maybe I could find Lorenzo now or…. I still didn’t know what the or could be.

Gale approached the nearest door. The molly had said Howe lived on the ground floor, first on the left. He rapped lightly on the door, and when there was no answer, he tried the knob. The door creaked open, a sliver of moonlight growing wider across the floorboards, casting shadow to the sides. He stepped inside, trying not to wince at the smell of mildew and unemptied chamber pots. The room was barely large enough to turn around in, and he unwittingly trod upon a straw mattress on the floor. He was now fully aware of what an idiotic idea this had been. All that would be accomplished here was that he or Chant would break an ankle. And yet as he brushed a hand over a rickety table, he felt crumbs not yet stale, and not yet carried away by vermin. The house was not empty.

“Elise,” he called softly. “Elise, come out, wherever you are hiding. We know you’re here.”

“I have no wish to offend,” Chant whispered. “But you sound rather like an axe-wielding madman indulging in a game of cat and mouse with his prey.”

“What would you have me say?” Gale asked, annoyed.

“If she’s here, she is probably very frightened. She does not know who we are or why we’ve come.”

“And you think she’ll be impressed if we announce our titles?”

It was too dark to see Chant roll his eyes, but Gale was certain that was what happened. “You said Howe told you she’d read the article about you? Let her know we’re on the case—”

“Do not call it a c—”

He was interrupted by… he was not quite sure what. One moment he was standing in the darkness, arguing with Chant, the next, he was lying on his side on the filthy floor, his head throbbing.

“Gale! Are you all right?” Chant cried out above him.

Blearily, he felt around on the floor until his hand closed upon a small but heavy bit of rock. Footsteps pattered toward the open front door. “Stop her,” Gale rasped.

“Elise!” Chant called out. “Elise, my name is Benjamin Chant. I’m here with Christmas Gale, the famous investigator—”

“Not an investigator.” Gale’s voice sounded as though he had swallowed chalk.

Chant ignored him. “He is here to help you find your missing dog.”

“I most certainly am not,” Gale objected, but the footsteps stopped. A moment later, a flimsy floorboard creaked, and a small face appeared above Gale, mostly shadow with a slip of silver across it from the moon.

“Christmas Gale?” piped a thin voice full of hope.

“Yes,” said Chant and knelt beside them both. “Christmas and I have come to help you, Elise.”

Gale pulled himself into a sitting position, trying not to groan.

“You’re really Lord Christmas?” the girl asked again.

“Joy to the world,” Gale muttered, rubbing the back of his head.

It was a pleasant change of pace to not dissolve into instant bickering, so I enjoyed the silence as we drifted in our separate thoughts. It lasted longer than I had expected before he asked me, “How long have you been planning this?”

Rather than telling the truth, I kept my answer playful. “Your arguments with reporters at press conferences give me a lot of time to think about other stuff I’d rather be doing.”

“Like me?” He scoffed at the notion. “You can’t be serious.”

I couldn’t resist teasing him a little. “Our fighting wasn’t foreplay for you?”

He turned his head to stare at me. “Seriously?”

I gave him my best attempt at an innocent expression. “What? Our banter really gets me going.”

Covering his face to hide the grin he couldn’t quite smother, he laughed hard. For once, it wasn’t bitter or haughty, but a sound of genuine amusement that warmed my heart. “Is that why you antagonize me?”

“Yes, and I’m very offended it took two years to get you to translate that into ‘please fuck me stupid,’” I said with mock upset. My peals of laughter ruined the effect, though. “How much more obvious could I be that I desired you?”

“Why?”

I reached out to caress his cheek with my clean hand as I gave him a sincere look. “Because all I have ever wanted these past five years was to be yours.”

“Five years? We’ve only been competing for two.”

“Yes, because it took me three years to become good enough to stand on the same stage as you.” I opened my heart up to him, hoping like hell he didn’t reject me for it. “I’ve been chasing after you since you trounced Terrence Rayston in your debut match.”

It was the first time I had ever stunned him into silence. Swallowing hard, he eventually said, “I don’t understand.”

“The media dubbed you the Iceman because of your icy blue eyes, the way you ruthlessly defeated every opponent, and your cold and aloof demeanor.” I stroked the outline of his strong jaw, amazed he hadn’t rejected me yet. “It confused me how so many people got you so wrong.”

“What do you mean?”

“You’re not ice—you’re fire.” I took a deep breath to steady my nerves. “I didn’t understand how none of them could see that you burn with a need to be the best and always win. You torched all your opponents to ashes with every triumph. It took me years to become good enough to feel your heat as I faced off against you.”

When he said nothing, I hesitated before I continued confessing. “If I didn’t beat you, you’d never notice me. That meant I had to be better than the best, because that was the only way to make you focus all your fire on me. I’m the only one who can withstand your flames. To make you see that, I had to drive you wild by being unbeatable. I want you to only burn for me.”

There’s a man hunched over me in concern as I lie on the freezing wet sand, wheezing and coughing the seawater from my lungs and spread out, rather unattractively, like some sort of graceless starfish.

I blink again, but all I can focus on is a pair of incredible hazel-coloured eyes. They’re staring at me, hovering just above my face. For a second, I’m still disorientated, so caught up in the golden amber and vivid green depths encircling those dark pupils, I almost miss the flash of fury until his sharp words penetrate the fog surrounding my brain.

‘What the hell were you thinking?’ he snaps angrily, raising his voice above the violent boom of the waves and the howl of the wind. ‘Are you stupid? Have you got no sense of self-preservation? “I want to talk to you.” Dad walks down the hallway to his office, knowing I’ll follow him. I lean against the doorframe, staying just far enough out that Zach will know where I am if he comes back into the kitchen.

Dad sits on the edge of his desk, facing me. “Who were the kids that were being mean?”

“Derek Sanders, the one I asked to leave here when he called Zach a stalker. Along with a few of JV freshman players that I don’t know well.”

“Not surprising, he seemed like a dick.”

My dad doesn’t usually call someone a dick, and it catches me so off guard that an abrupt laugh escapes from my chest.

“What were they making fun of him about?”

“His size…being a fourth-grader…a hobbit. Then they called him queer, and he got up and left.”

“No wonder he was so upset.” Dad rubs the back of his neck, and I realize that I have that same habit when I’m stressed.

“He was upset because he thought it would embarrass me. He never wants to hurt anyone, and when he thinks he’s the cause of it, he can’t handle it.”

“That’s why it makes me livid that someone would hurt him, even with words. God knows the kid has been through enough already.”

I catch movement out of the corner of my eye and turn to see Zach in the kitchen, looking lost. I wave my arm so he sees me, and he smiles. I watch him walk over to help Mom with the ice cream before looking back at Dad.

“He trusts you, Brady. The kind of trust that most people will never give. Be sure to treasure that and not do anything to break it. I’m not sure you could get it back if you did.”

Dad’s words feel heavy, like I need to memorize them and keep them close. “I wouldn’t do anything to break his trust.”

“I know you never would intentionally, but you’re young, and teenagers do stupid things. I think you’re mature beyond your years, and I am so proud of the young man you’re becoming. I’m only cautioning you because I see the bond you have with Zach, and I’m not sure you truly understand what it would mean to lose that. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime kind of friendship…love…and so many go through life searching for what you’ve found so young. Many never find it.”

He walks over to put his hand on my shoulder, squeezing gently. “All I’m saying, Son, is that when it comes to Zach, think before you react and don’t take all the love and trust he gives you for granted. Someday you’ll truly understand the depth and beauty of what he gives you. And what you give him.” His hand moves down over my heart. “You’ve given him a lot of space in here. Take care of your heart, Son, because that boy in the kitchen is most of it.”

I nod, speechless at my dad’s words.

It’s a long-standing tradition before finals. He’d done the same at Indian-Wells and Miami too, and Soren had done the same before Elias had gone onto court in pursuit of the Paris Masters title the previous season.

Soren looks up when Elias slips through the door and pushes away from the wall.

He smiles and taps the underside of Soren’s chin with the back of his knuckles.

Soren nods, his face still serious. “I will,” he says and tilts his head to the side.

He studies Elias for a long, weighted moment, and then his lips curl up in the corners.

Elias takes a step back, and the cool air rushing between them is like a slap to the face. He blinks first, and his own smile tugs the corners of his mouth up.

“I cannot wait to see you lift that cup again,” he says honestly.

“I will not disappoint you.” Soren ducks his head and does a half-turn back and away from Elias.

Elias catches his hand, squeezing just once.

“You could never.” He drops Soren’s hand and steps back. “I will see you out there.”

Soren’s gaze on him is a weight that follows all the way into the stands and to the box.
