Elias steals into the locker room before Soren’s match against Tyrone Ioannou.

It’s a long-standing tradition before finals. He’d done the same at Indian-Wells and Miami too, and Soren had done the same before Elias had gone onto court in pursuit of the Paris Masters title the previous season.

Some small part of him thinks that without it—the lingering embrace and Soren’s bright, laughing face in his mind’s eye as he walked the tunnel and onto the court to face Tiago Castillo—he never would have won.

He hopes he can give Soren the same.

Soren looks up when Elias slips through the door and pushes away from the wall.

Elias crosses the distance between them and pulls Soren to him, cradling the back of his head in one hand and breathing in deeply.

“You can do it,” he says against Soren’s ear, and holds him there for a heartbeat longer than he intends to. When he pulls back, Soren’s eyes are intent upon him.

He smiles and taps the underside of Soren’s chin with the back of his knuckles.

“Go and show him that you are to be feared, solstråle.”

Soren nods, his face still serious. “I will,” he says and tilts his head to the side.

He studies Elias for a long, weighted moment, and then his lips curl up in the corners.

Elias takes a step back, and the cool air rushing between them is like a slap to the face. He blinks first, and his own smile tugs the corners of his mouth up.

“I cannot wait to see you lift that cup again,” he says honestly.

“I will not disappoint you.” Soren ducks his head and does a half-turn back and away from Elias.

Elias catches his hand, squeezing just once.

“You could never.” He drops Soren’s hand and steps back. “I will see you out there.”

Soren’s gaze on him is a weight that follows all the way into the stands and to the box.

“Are you going to call Precious and have her talk to Mary about the séance?” Vincent’s rumbling voice was a bit of a surprise in the dark room. I was at that stage in between consciousness when my body was trying to decide whether falling asleep or staying awake to try to converse with the man in my arms, was the better idea. “I’ll talk to her at work tomorrow. It’s late and there’s no reason to wake either of them up unless you’re afraid Blue will be back tonight.” Vincent’s low chuckle made me smile against his chest as his arms tightened around me. “He hasn’t been in touch for nearly two months. I don’t think it’s a five-alarm fire at this point. That doesn’t mean I don’t want to resolve this as quickly as we can.” I heard his voice take on a sobering note. “I think it’s important that we lay him to rest, don’t you?” Vincent asked. “Of course, I do,” I replied, sleepily. “As soon as I get to work tomorrow, I’ll talk to Precious, and we’ll arrange a time in the next couple of days. I’ll talk to Sid too.” “Okay, Romeo. Now, you should rest. I’m sure there will be another joyriding incident for you to investigate in the morning and you will need all your strength for the coming storm.” I laughed and squeezed his waist, digging my fingers in. He let out a high-pitched giggle and twisted away from me. The girly sound coming out of the seven-hundred-year-old medieval knight, made me laugh even harder. I sat up and straddled him, reaching down to tickle him with both hands. He laughed and tried to squirm away from me, dropping his fangs as his lips stretched widely over his teeth. I’d never seen a vampire so ticklish before. Who was I kidding? Vincent was the only vampire I’d ever known but that didn’t matter. Seeing him laugh like that was hilarious and it just made me want to do it over and over again. “Stop it! Stop it!” he cried. Then, he was out from under me, off the bed, and across the room, still laughing, in the blink of an eye. I sat back on my ass and held out my arms. “I’ll stop. Come back to bed.” “No more tickles,” he said, walking slowly over to me. I chuckled and then sobered as my gaze slid down his beautiful body. The massive scar from his collar bone to his belly button was the most obvious of all. I wiggled my fingers and patted my belly. “Cuddle with me. I promise no more unexpected tickling will occur tonight.” He smiled and dropped down on the bed, cuddling up to my side and throwing a thigh over mine. I wrapped him in my arms and within minutes, my breathing had evened out and I drifted off to sleep.

Their horses licked each other playfully.

Darcy’s voice rumbled. “We should get back before it pours.”

Bennet wholeheartedly agreed.

The sky opened and they rode, laughing, through the downpour.

Laughter dissolved as awareness thickened around them. They’d seen one another half-naked before but this was different. This time, Bennet was aware how much they both liked what they saw. This time, Bennet knew Darcy wanted to touch him. Explore him. This time, Bennet was tempted.

Darcy swallowed. “You’re covered in goosebumps. You should, ah, warm yourself in the shower.”

A spell under cold water might have been more helpful; Bennet set the shower to lukewarm and made quick work of soaping himself, drying off with equal efficiency.

His hair dripped onto his shoulders as he stepped—once more wearing only his underwear—out of the bathroom.

Darcy approached, carrying a pile of clothes. He had slung on a dry T-shirt and dark shorts. It was so remarkably casual that Bennet stared at him as though he continued to wear nothing.

“Here. Something dry.”

Bennet blinked. The same jeans and blouse he’d borrowed last time. He fingered the material.

“You like bright colors,” Darcy said uncertainly. “Did I get it wrong?” He gestured to Bennet’s eyes. “I thought this one would look good. That you’d like it.”

It wasn’t exactly his style, but . . . He pictured Darcy rummaging through his children’s things, searching for something Bennet would like and feel comfortable in.

Right from the beginning, Darcy had tried.

He shook his head. “You got it right.” I’m sorry I didn’t appreciate your choice enough last time. “Thank you.”

Darcy nodded. “I, ah. Shower.”

“So tell us what’s happened.” Dad straightened in his chair and shifted into his authoritative all-business voice.

Oliver nodded. “Two days ago Sofia and I were in Central Park for a photo shoot for her next album. It attracted a fair amount of attention because word spread on social media that we were there. Three guys rushed us from nowhere. Thankfully we were able to manage it, but they almost had Sofia in an SUV before my guys got their act together.” Panic flashed in his eyes. “We were in the northern part of the park and regular vehicles aren’t allowed up there, so how did they even get in? And why can no one figure out who they are? It’s like they disappeared.”

“Has anything unusual been going on?” Mom picked up with the questions. “Recently fired people with a grudge? Business deals that went sideways?”

Oliver shrugged. “No more than usual. My team’s vetted the people who have left the company—both fired and leaving on their own—from the past six months. No red flags. As for business deals. We turn things down all the time, but none of it seems out of the ordinary. We can re-review if you think it’d reveal anything.”

“Why don’t you let us do it?” Dad asked. “If it’s someone inside your organization, you might get false information back.”

“Won’t you raise more suspicions?”

Mom and Dad looked at each other.

“No.” Dad smiled, and Oliver seemed to relax. “Just tell us the employees and the companies we need to look at and we’ll take it from there. What about your personal security?”

“I’m worried they can’t do the job. There were four of them in the park and… well.”

“We’ll examine security from top to bottom.” Mom looked to Dad. “I’ll take physical security. We’ll use Theo’s expertise to examine your IT network and see if there’re any red flags there.” Her eyes darted to me as she mentioned my name, and I nodded.

Oliver’s brow wrinkled as he tried to reconcile that bit of information. “You’re a security expert?” It was cool he looked at me as he asked and not to my parents. He managed to not sound condescending either, even though he wasn’t sure.

“Yes, sir.” I reached into my back pocket, pulled my wallet, and fished out a business card. These were for show, but I kept a couple on me just in case. “I have a consulting firm.” I handed over the card and he studied it. It was plain white with “Theodore Reese—Cyber Security Specialist” in two lines at the center of the card. In the lower corners were an email address and phone number.

“He’s been brilliant with computers for years, and he’s taken courses at MIT for the past two years.” I didn’t get to see Mom be the proud parent very often, so it was nice to see her light up talking about my accomplishments.

“Impressive.”

“Thanks.” We traded nods.

“I’m sending you to Alaska.”

The next morning, Roberta glares at me from behind her desk. The expression is one hundred percent do not fuck with me, and I resent it to the core of my being. If anyone’s been fucked with, it’s me.

“Alaska?”

“You’re lucky it’s not somewhere farther,” she says. “After your outburst last night, the studio is very unhappy. A bar fight with your director is not the kind of publicity they want right now.”

“It wasn’t a bar fight. He was being a drama queen. And I’m not exactly tap dancing for joy either.” In fact, I’m pacing on the rug. Sitting still is impossible. My whole body feels electric with anxiety.

“Yes, but you don’t stand to lose three hundred million dollars when this film flops. The premiere weekend box office numbers aren’t good.”

“That’s not my fault. If they hired someone who knew how to write dialogue better than a middle schooler, we’d be in much better shape.”

“That may be.” She knows as well as I do the script for Shadow League 4 was written and rewritten by no less than nine people over the last two years. Over the course of a bloated nearly-three-hour final cut, my character, supposedly a mafia son out for revenge, had done everything from drive a tank through the jungle to perform open-heart surgery on his assassin girlfriend while they were hiding out from the bad guys on a glacier. It was nonsensical. “But you calling your director a—” She glances down at a legal pad on her desk. “—talentless prick jockey in front of the entire world means it’s easy enough to pin the failure on you. And then you decide to pick a fight with him at a dive bar.”

“How many times do I have to tell you it wasn’t a fight? He made it—”

She cuts me off. “And that, in turn, will make it very difficult for you to work on any future franchises at this level again. How badly do you want to keep your job, Damian?”

She’s right. It’s already starting. The headlines this morning when I checked them still included recaps from the Cannes incident, but also featured new eye-catching questions like Damian Marshall in Barroom Brawl and Is it Time to Cancel Damian Marshall?

I sink into a chair. “Hawaii is farther. I could go to Hawaii.”

Unfortunately, though, Roberta is bulletproof. She’s been around the block too many times to be swayed by my appeal. Instead of melting and booking me a jet to Honolulu, she arches a perfectly plucked eyebrow—quite the feat considering Roberta’s face hasn’t moved in at least the last thirty years—and says, “Would you rather it be North Dakota?”

I cross my arms over my chest. “No need to say hurtful things like that. I thought we were friends.”

“I’m never friendly with the talent. Wouldn’t want you to get the wrong idea about how this relationship works.”

I was unprepared for Kingston’s smirk to turn sensuous. “If I didn’t know any better, I’d think you’re a masochist who gets off on losing to me.”

The claim was preposterous, but it outraged me with the presumptuousness of it. I vibrated with the force of my rage, resenting that everything in my life had become tied up in one infuriating individual who refused to submit to me. “I fucking hate you.”

Kingston arched against me with a sensuous moan. “Yeah? Then hate me harder.”

Confusing as it was, I couldn’t ignore that my body reacted to his gratuitous display. “What?”

“Harder,” he gasped like he was begging me to fuck him. He rocked his hips against mine with another breathy, pleading noise.

My eyes widened when I felt Kingston’s hard length pressing against me. Part of my brain was shocked that maybe Kingston was gay, since I had never heard rumors about him being with a partner of either gender. But the realization of what I had done to him sent a jolt of adrenaline rocketing through my system. Having the power to arouse him opened up new avenues to get even with him. I may have been straight, but the prospect of dominating Kingston fired me up like nothing else ever had.

The thought of having him under me, begging me for pleasure, stoked my lust into a roaring blaze. It was a powerful aphrodisiac, swaying me into questioning the merits of our latest battle taking place with our bodies rather than in a stadium. Even the rational part of my brain was on board with the idea, making the argument that a hole was a hole, and defeating him in bed would provide a new level of satisfaction.

Revealing none of my interest or intentions, I needed to make sure we were on the same page. “Are you offering yourself to me?” When he didn’t answer, I groped his ass and pulled his body flush against mine. It didn’t appall me as I would have expected considering I had only been interested in women in the past. Instead, I flew high on the power trip of knowing I had him at my mercy if he wanted sexual gratification from me.

“I want you to fuck me like you hate me.” He pressed himself against me, allowing him to tug on my earlobe with his teeth.

The action went straight to my dick, which demanded I take the chance to dominate my otherwise unbeatable opponent, sexuality be damned. “I absolutely hate you.”

“Then fuck me like you mean it.” Kingston gave me a cocky smirk before he pulled me down for a harsh kiss.

His mouth quirks and he claps his hands together. “Come on then, Mags. The day’s a wasting.”

“I’m not sure that my day was wasting in any form.”

“Were you working?”

I nod.

“It’s a Saturday. Your day was definitely being wasted. Come on,” he says. “Grab a jacket and your pension book and let’s go for a walk. It’s a lovely day”

“I do not possess a pension book,” I state. “Because I am only a few years older than you.”

“It’s not the age. It’s the mileage,” he says happily. “And those twinks of yours look like they could take a lot out of a person’s tank.”

I want to be angry, and indeed I open my mouth to blast him, but what comes out, to my amazement, is a huge laugh. He watches me, smiling, and when

I’ve finished chuckling, I wink at him. “I have a tank with a great capacity,” I inform him.

“Those who don’t, brag. Get your stuff and hurry up.”
