“That’s how it has to be, dearest.” Nathanial’s voice was like the soft strings of a melody. He reached a delicate hand forward, long slender fingers poised to touch, but skittered away like a cockroach at the last minute.

They haven’t touched in years. Two large men loomed by the door; their hulking statures were enough to make Kristján’s knees quake. Beady eyes drilled into him, and he caught a whiff of their open disdain. Filthy skrælingjar. Well, they could fuck off to hell and back. Yet still, Kristján snaked his hands beneath the table, hiding the talon-like claws and his perked ears flattened.

“B-but…” Kristján’s voice was tired. Weak. Nothing but a frail squeak of nonsensical sounds.

“Don’t you want to leave? Isn’t this the perfect opportunity?” Nathanial cut him off, a hint of impatience in his tone. “Come now, it won’t be for too long.”

The words made his head snap up. He gazed at Nathanial disbelieving before his eyes darted to the men by the door carrying heavy iron chains. A viperous grin slithered over Nathanial’s lips, and his black hair cascaded over his broad shoulders, pooling on his lap like ink. Pale as the moon, Nathanial’s peach blossom eyes were curved with mocking laughter, and his pink lips were the color of red wine.

“Cousin,” he half moaned and half pouted. “Don’t you want to do this favor for me?”

Acid sloshed around in Kristján’s stomach. Favor? How the fuck was any of this a favor? Nathanial always had this way of twisting things, downplaying the seriousness by cooing noises. The reality was that Kristján was being sent to his death and there wasn’t a damn thing he could do about it.

A taller goblin passed by Shi’chen and gave a small smirk that curled his thin lip up with disdain. “Good day, Captain Er-Ha’sen.”

“Good day,” Shi’chen said, barely giving him a glance out of the corner of his eye.

The older man came to a stop on his other side, silently watching the sparring for a moment. “And how is your brother today?” he asked, his voice light and full of innocence.

Shi’chen gritted his teeth, his fingers clenching around the shaft of his spear. “Did you need something, Captain Hin-Ve’ssa?”

“Just making conversation,” the older Captain said.

Shi’chen pulled his helmet and sand silk veil off so he could glare into the man’s hawk-yellow eyes with his own ember-orange ones. “Do not play me for a fool, Hi’jan.”

“Of course not, Your Highness,” Hi’jan said with a small, mock bow. “I know I could never play you.” He was silent for a long moment before he leaned in a bit closer so only the shorter Captain could hear him. “Of course, your brother is much easier.” Shi’chen’s eyes flashed, and Hi’jan laughed softly. “Ah, come now, Your Highness, surely you don’t think the whole palace doesn’t know that your brother will spread his legs for any pretty face. Even yours.”

Shi’chen hissed through his teeth and pushed his shield out of the way with his foot before leveling his spear toward Hi’jan. “You will watch your mouth, Captain.” The title came out as a growl.

Apparently Hi’jan had been expecting this reaction, because he immediately dropped into a fighting stance, pulling his short sword from his belt. “I’d like to see you make me, Captain.” He shifted, and Shi’chen only had a moment to realize that Hi’jan was moving so the sunlight hit him in the eyes before charging at him to try to close the distance. He dodged back, using his spear to keep Hi’jan at bay. The taller man moved quickly, avoiding the tip of the spear as his own blade whistled closer and closer to the smaller goblin with little regard for the places his armor protected. Shi’chen used his spear to block a strike from the short sword, thrusting it at Hi’jan, being careful not to do more than just drive him back with it. Hi’jan seemed to be showing no such caution, circling Shi’chen and darting in with his blade before moving back again when Shi’chen knocked it aside.

Shi’chen registered in the back of his mind that the sounds of others fighting had faded away except for the clash of his own weapon with Hi’jan’s, and the guards had all turned to watch them. Jeers and shouts of encouragement rang out from the assembly as they watched the two Captains dodge and thrust. Damn it all to the gods, why had he let Hi’jan taunt him into attacking him in front of their companies? But it was too late to stop it now.

I better collect my thoughts about them now, before I forget. So, emotions. They can be bottled. And not in the unhealthy way, we do it on Earth. It is not like you feel numb, after bottling your emotions, or you get holes in your memory. It is a perfectly harmless way to share what you are feeling with the world. Even children do it. Even I do it.

My in-law, Constantine, I think I have mentioned him a couple of times. Well, he used to be a professional happiness bottler, and did it all without being on a constant sugar high.

How he managed to keep himself happy long enough to support himself with it, is beyond me. Daniel, my cousin, also bottles his emotions. He got me into doing the same. I use the emotions I bottle, to barter for things in the New Cosmos.

In my bottomless bag, something that I was given by Dorothea as a gift, when I started working for Manacom, I have all the potions I bottled during the weekend. Plus, a couple
of Daniel and Constantine’s. Daniel is 41, while I am 25. I have been a citizen of the Cosmos for the last five months, but have been living in there and traveling between the two dimensions for the past year. I really should mention that in my next vlog entry.

About the Author:

Teodora is someone whose greatest passion is telling stories. Not just any stories, but stories that are all about love, no matter the gender of the people involved in the romance.
She is often lost in one fantasy world or the other, with the occasional excursion into space, in the early hours of the morning.

Chapter 1: Mingo Nevins

Marley set his coffee aside but continued petting my cat. “Perhaps if you weren’t so self-righteous all the time, we would get along.”

“Oh, I’m the fucking problem?” I demanded with outrage.

“You never give an inch.”

“Because you would take a mile!” I huffed with irritation.

As always, he was unflappably cool. It was infuriating. “I don’t know what you’re so mad about. You started the animosity first.”

“No, it started with you being an insufferable know-it-all about everything.” I couldn’t stand it.

He shrugged. “What’s wrong with knowing a lot of things about a ton of stuff?”

“It has more to do with how you use your ‘superior intellect’ as a weapon to make everyone feel bad about themselves.” I had seen him use his knowledge to beat down so many people in our classes. He tried to put me in my place, but I did my best to never let him get the upper hand. It was tough when we almost always ended up with a few together each semester since we both studied the same period of Japanese history.

“If they feel bad about themselves because they were out-argued, that’s a them-problem. It’s not my fault that they’re intimidated by my brilliance because of their own inferiority complex.”

Whenever he said such arrogant things, it made my teeth grind. “Oh, please. You’re not that great. I can eat a bowl of alphabet soup and shit out a better argument than you could ever dream of coming up with.” I hated how it gratified me when he genuinely laughed at my comment while my friends howled with amusement.

“Ha, I’d like to see you try.”

“In the spirit of the seasons, I’d rather see Mingo try to eviscerate Marley with Christmas puns,” Alain said. He was always the first to goad us on because he was convinced we wanted to fuck out our aggression. “Because this is love at frost sight if I’ve ever seen it.”

“Love at frost sight?” I scoffed at the ridiculous notion. “I’d rather deck his halls!”

It startled me when Marley reached over with a crooked finger and tilted my chin up to meet his gaze. “Funny, it sounds more like you want to jingle my bells and make this a white Christmas,” he said in a dark rumble that turned my insides to molten lava. Despite the ambiguity surrounding his sexuality, he certainly looked interested in seducing me. Damn it, I was too much of a sucker for clever wordplay for him to be that skilled at my favorite type of banter. Why did he always have to be the best at everything? It wasn’t fair. “Is that what you want, Mingo?”

More than anything, what I wanted to do was shut him up for good. As he looked deep into my eyes while caressing under my chin like he had done to my cat, something vital broke inside my brain. It was the only excuse for why I reached out, grabbed a fistful of his soft cardigan, and yanked him in for a demanding kiss under the mistletoe hanging above us. After all, there was more than one way to win an argument. And I was determined to come out on top for once, even if it meant playing a little dirty.
