“Are you all prepared for Christmas?” Dee—my roommate and number one chief helper with my two girls—asked. “You’ve seemed on edge the last few days?”

I took a peep of my twin girls coloring away together at the dining room table, designing their Christmas cookies that we were planning to make later for Santa. I indicated for Dee to join me in the kitchen so that we could have some privacy.

“Girls,” I called to Riley and Ana. “Aunty Dee and I are just going to make a drink. If you need us, just shout.” I turned to enter the kitchen. “I can’t wait to see what you come up with.”

“They are good girls,” Dee began, “and even the social worker said that you’re doing a fantastic job in fostering them. I’m so excited that you’re taking the next step and looking at full time residency with them.” Dee paused to pour us two glasses of coke, passing one to me before she spoke again. “Is that what has been on your mind?”

“A little,” I admitted. “I’ve put the offer on the new house but I wanted Christmas to be perfect,” I said in a whispered tone just as a text came through on my phone. I quickly read the message and looked across at the girls and then back to Dee. “I could still make it perfect.”

I showed Dee my phone and a massive smile graced her lips. She nodded and I could see that a plan was already starting to come together in her head as she played with her bright red locks.

“Go, before the weather changes anymore. I’ll message Walker and get the night off at work. He owes me anyway.” She smiled sweetly at me before she looked over at the two girls. “The forecast of this snow is getting bad but I’m guessing it’s a few hours out.”

“Yeah, Pennsylvania. I can be back tomorrow night if I set off early enough. Liv—my sister—and Matt arrives tomorrow for the Christmas break. I’m sure after they’ve gone to find Hardin at North Avenue Live, she’ll come across to see the girls,” I said nonchalantly as I seriously contemplated traveling to Maple Oaks Acres just to collect a puppy to complete my girls’ Christmas. “You know Liv won’t want to be stuck with her brother-in-law, Hardin and have the two of them talking business.” Dee rolled her eyes at that. Every time that Hardin and Matt got together in a room, it’s usually for them to not talk about the bars they own or what latest venture is on the cards.

I knew that the puppy would be the perfect gift to support my commitment to them both and tell them that if they wanted a forever home with me, then they could have it. Even though I was only thirty years old and people automatically questioned my life when they saw me with my four-year-olds. My girls had shown me that if you’re willing to give a little, then the rewards you reap can be huge.

I knew what the pain of rejection from the majority of my family—barring Liv—felt like and I couldn’t bear to see others go through what we did.

“Kellan, just go,” Dee replied before she pulled me into a hug. “Go and say goodbye to the girls,” she whispered into my ear, “and we’ll have the time of our lives while you’re gone. Trust me.”

“I don’t know what I’d do without you,” I said truthfully as I kissed her cheek, making her blush before I headed over toward the girls. I ran my hand over their silken blond heads before I spoke. “Hey, you two. How would you like to have some special time with Aunty Dee while I go and do a job?”

“Yayyyy!” the duo chorused together, making my heart swell. “We’ll have the best time. Be careful though.”

“Of course, I will. You too.”

They looked happy outside on the glass dome roof. The way they laughed with their father had Eryn wishing he could have joined them. He longed to play with them and to be part of their world of love and affection. Their fathers hugged them and gave them lots of attention. For now, he would hide and pretend, but one day, he knew he would be able to show his strange face, visit the family, and play with the boys. He wished silently, even if it was just for a short time or just one day.

If Joshua found out, he could be in big trouble and possibly sent home. I never want to go home. For now, he was just as happy sneaking around and spying. Maybe not today, but I’ll talk to them one day. He made that promise to himself. At the same time, he covered his mouth and giggled again at seeing Connor become increasingly irritated as he grew nervously anxious, fearing Mika and the twins could slide off the roof. As the scene of Connor spying on Mika and the boys played out in front of Eryn, his level of amusement rose to nearly unmanageable levels, and the bin rattled louder. Connor’s anticipation of seeing the three rubbed off on Eryn, and as soon as Connor’s eyes caught a glimpse of the three up on the roof with safety harnesses around their bodies, the relief and love Connor felt flowed into Eryn. Connor watched as they sat in a tight row. Eryn gasped softly, and then he waited.

From Eryn’s viewpoint, he could see both fathers. Mika held onto both the boys, Ivan on his right and Cian on his left. He sensed Connor was a bit sad that he was inside and they were outside. He also felt Connor’s nervousness seeing them on top of the highest point of the frozen dome roof. His anxious heartbeats were louder than usual. Eryn’s inhumanly perfect hearing and empathic abilities came in handy when he pretended to be part of this family. He loved watching the loving interactions, no other family loved each other like this family, and he could watch them all day long. It calmed him and soothed him deep inside.

He crossed his legs, resting his elbows on his knees and chin in his hands while smiling longingly at the scene playing out. Connor glowed with pride and adoration for his husband and the two boys. Eryn’s little heart yearned while Connor watched Mika trying to hold onto their kids and simultaneously explaining with his hands and fully immersed himself in the educational conversation with his boys by gesturing with accordion-player hands as he explained something big and explosive.

As Eryn’s mouth hung open in concentration, he twisted his head from side to side as he deciphered the miming. He playfully chuckled softly, pretending to sit outside on the rooftop while listening to Mika. He enjoyed the animated hand gestures of explosions and waves crashing most. He copied Mika, eyes wide open, hands in fists, gesturing animatedly and making pow-pow sounds while simultaneously opening and closing his hands. He knew Mika was talking about the world before the “Big Flood.” Ivan pointed to the satellite dishes poking through the icy surface. Mika continued explaining what they were used for. He nodded a yes, then put his thumb to his ear and his pinky to his mouth. No one knew what that was, Eryn included. Then he heard Connor talking as if Mika and the twins could listen to him through the glass wall. “It’s to enhance communication. We used to send sound waves from one dish to another to talk or receive information from the outside world.”

We sipped hot cocoa, chatting idly as we watched the flickering embers and twinkling lights from the Christmas tree. We’d talked about taking a shower and rustling up something to eat, but this was warm and cozy. And it felt nice to lean back with our legs tangled and Cam’s hand resting over mine.

“I forget you’re famous sometimes.” My tone was light, but I must have struck a nerve.

Cam sipped his cocoa quietly. “I don’t feel famous. I’m a storyteller, that’s all.”

“A very good one…so they say,” I added with a teasing wink.

“Maybe. But I get lost in the accolades. I have a message from Martin on my cell. He must have texted while we were sledding. He’s excited about a new contract. He wants me in LA to do a holiday promotion. He went on and on about how fucking excited everyone is, and he’s already working with art directors…and something about billboards and social media adverts, and—fuck, that’s not real to me. It’s noise. Being here with you…this is real.”

I rested my chin on his shoulder, then kissed his neck. “It’s real to me too.”

Cam’s lips quirked at the corners. “I even like that damn tree.”

“It’s a good one. A little plain, but good,” I agreed.

“You’re right. It’s too plain. Let’s fix that.”

“Huh?”

He sat up quickly and set his mug on the mantel. Without a word, he left the room and returned a moment later with the lone box of holiday decorations we’d left sitting in the hallway for weeks. He popped open the lid and sank to his knees to inspect the contents.

“Angels, stars, and red bulbs. I should have guessed,” he chuckled. “C’mon, my fellow Scrooge. Help me decorate this baby.”

Archer shivered at the thought of a warm bed and hot soup as the northern wind rolled over the courtyard, making the bare tree branches tremble. He followed Marion up the concrete stairs to the hallway. It was roofed, but totally open to the courtyard. Some doors had plastic chairs and metal tables in front and all rooms had windows. The space between the doors was quite big, which probably meant several people occupied each room.

Marion looked at the door frame where a small metal plate had 221 inscribed on it. “Your apartment, Archer.”

Fate is an odd thing, isn’t it?

If I hadn’t had too much to drink last night, sitting not only alone but lonely at the hotel bar after the dull-as-dishwater conference I’d attended on behalf of my accounting firm, I might not have accidentally set my alarm for seven p.m. instead of seven a.m. And if I’d set my alarm for the right time, I most certainly wouldn’t have missed my flight out of Asheville.

If I hadn’t missed my plane, I wouldn’t have returned to the hotel to book myself in for another night while I attempted to wrangle a new flight or a rental car for a non-exorbitant price the next day.

And if I hadn’t returned to the hotel, I never would have known it was hosting a very different crowd over the weekend for a fascinating special event.

And if…

Well, you get the point.

If it hadn’t been for all that, I wouldn’t be here now, in the middle of the Blue Ridge Kink Club’s Christmas Auction, having paid thirty dollars at the door for the privilege of sipping a watered-down drink and watching people in all kinds of bondage and kink gear getting their wild on. Nor would I be walking through the various kinky offerings for the auction.

For one thing, I’m not from around here, so a lot of this stuff—like the whipping, for example—would be hard to collect on, and for another thing, I’m not sure I’m even kinky.

I’ve only been out as a gay man for a few years, having waited until my parents died to be true to myself. During those long, dark years in the closet, I gave (more like endured) my share of quick and raunchy blowjobs, but those kinds of experiences aren’t what I want or need anymore.

That’s something I’m still trying to figure out. What do I want? What do I need?

Hookup apps have been informative. Actual hookups themselves would have been even more so—but so far the apps have mostly been helpful in terms of highlighting what I don’t want. Not that I can explain what that is in any detail either.

I just know of everything I’ve done to explore my sexuality—whether it’s the nasty furtive stuff of my youth or contemplating possible hookups—none of it has been fulfilling or right.

All I’ve ever wanted is to feel right.

During my stay for my business meeting, I’d already explored the hotel’s various amenities. All typical and not worth checking out again. I’d already walked around Asheville and enjoyed its offerings, though it’s always lonely being in a new place with no one to share it with.

So, after a solitary dinner at a local restaurant, when I returned to the hotel to see signs for the Blue Ridge Kink Club Christmas Charity Auction stating 18+ members of the general public were welcome to pay for entrance and even more welcome to bid, I decided to see what it was about. Because I still haven’t found what I’m looking for, and, who knows? Maybe it’s here.

Right about now, as I pause in front of one particular offering, I’m not sure how I feel about my choice to come to the auction tonight. It might have opened a Pandora’s Box for me.

Because I’m captivated.
